  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark, EG4 Communications Hub/LifePower4 - Solar Assistant configuration

The cable is straight through to avoid any pin out issues. Have you had any success getting SA to speak with one battery? Once you do, pushing that data over MQTT to HA allows for some beautiful dashboards. Check out my mobile view that I’ve been polishing up since my initial post.
  • Post in thread: Generator calculation validation

I like the 70% of load estimate for ideal generator load. What I was trying to get at is, over simplified for illustration; a large generator for a small load isn’t needed, efficient or cost effective. If the equipment you’re powering from the generator can’t even consume 30% of its output...
  • Post in thread: PV size validation

Okay so if you have more wattage than what the inverter can use for example a 7s4p configuration, that is fine so long as the amps and volts are under the maximum for the inverter?? Again thank you so much for your responses, I feel like I knew this stuff in theory, but the practicality of...
  • Post in thread: How Many kWh Should I See in Real World Conditions?

I'm a little new, but volts multiplied by amps equals watts, watts is actual power. So my math says your total watt-hours are 10,240 between all four of your batteries. You have both wires and inverter efficiency that takes some power, plus the inverter itself uses power for operation. So...

Looks nice, thank you for sharing.
  • Post in thread: Solar wiring questions, especially disconnect/breakers on the PV side.

For grounding you should interconnect all the panel frames and then run a ground to a ground rod that is barrier at least 6 feet in the ground. This will discharge static and help protect from lightning. For fuses in your array you only need them if your total short circuit curren exceeds your...
  • Post in thread: Solar assistant: do you use it?

I've been using this one for two months, if you want USB C, just use a USB A to USB C cable, however you'll only get about 5v, (standard USB voltage). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076ZLHLD3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  • Post in thread: Cost of LFP batteries in USA

I never understood the idea of tariffs on products that do not have a domestic supply. Increasing the tariffs raises the prices we have to pay for these batteries so that maybe,... an American company might build them instead. I think right now it's tough to know which way the wind is...
  • Post in thread: EG4 Lifepower4 48V Top Balancing Firmware.

So what does this mean, are you saying the recommended max charge voltage has now been increased but is not document?
  • Post in thread: Will Sol-Ark 15K automatically stop feeding grid if grid goes down?

I can confirm this is the behavior of the Sol-Ark to not back feed when no grid is connected, and as others have stated every grid-connected inverter in the US behaves this way, unless you're in Hawaii where the solar helps with brownouts. If you are able to disconnect/reconnect the grid to...
  • Post in thread: Solar assistant: do you use it?

I haven't seen anyone mention these devices, I currently have one at a few properties. You can run 2 IP cameras with it, it does cloud backups, DNS, VPN, NAS features and a whole lot more, best of all it runs a VM's which is where I have HA running...
  • Post in thread: EG4 Lifepower4 48V Top Balancing Firmware.

Looks like EG4 just released new firmware for the communications hub and it seems to be related to my question.
  • Post in thread: Looking for a replacement BMS for an EG4 LifePower4 48 volt battery

There is a Mac version, but I'm not aware of an iOS version. The MAC/Windows app is currently so hacktastic I'd be surprised if they could get it into the iOS app store unless the developers suddenly wrote more intuitive and better-designed applications.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K idle consumption

It was actually cheaper than the EG4 18k. Which IMO is a more mature, stable and certainly unarguably better supported product.
  • Post in thread: System Design Feedback Requested

Nice diagram! One thing that stood out to me is that it appears you're going to use your trailer frame as the negative path for your DC system. Typically you would route all your negative wires back to your negative bus bar and not back through the frame of your trailer. Is this your intent...
  • Post in thread: New SolArk 12K, X2, issues/glitches..

Regarding the yellow battery shading, from my understanding that typically means that the currenltly flowing amps are near the programmed limit. Is it possible that since they're in a Master/Slave combination, the 100 amps you have set is actually the aggregate? That would kinda make sense...
  • Post in thread: EG4 6000ex not taking in PV

It's possible you could have an MPPT failure, it's also possible that you have a physical fault somewhere that has interrupted the current from your panels to your MPPT, or you've encountered some sort of software glitch. However, your only method of confirmation will be to physically check all...
  • Post in thread: EG4 Lifepower4 48V Top Balancing Firmware.

On the 27th, the batteries reached 56.6 volts at 20:31, and charging completely stopped at 21:01, by 22:04 they trickled back down to to 53.4
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K second battery question

Hi @Keith Moreau My 12 Lifepo4 EG4 batteries are connected to an EG4 communications hub. The hub then connects to the sol ark. The yellow ethernet cable is connected on the other end to the communications hub. The beige splitter is used, so that solar assistant can talk to the inverter...
  • Post in thread: How Many kWh Should I See in Real World Conditions?

Do you have a picture of the way you have your batteries installed?
  • Post in thread: EG4 battery rack, 6 batteries & 2 pairs of wire?

I don't know if something like this exists for the 18K, but for Sol-Ark there is a company that makes these handy little bus bars so you can run single 4/0 cables and not have to either double the cables or use Polaris connectors...
  • Post in thread: EG4 18kpv 240volt output

In the past you needed two units each producing 120V, they also had to communicate with each other so they could align the phase of the power to create a 240 circuit for larger energy demands. Many AIO (All In One) Sol-Ark, EG4, Deye, all have the ability to output 240V from a single unit. The...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K idle consumption

If they have software-accessible power features, you could potentially put them in sleep/hibernate mode with remote commands. I don't recall if you can tell the Sol-Ark to turn off remotely or if there are any inverters on the market with this feature. Actually, my Victron Inverter can be...
  • Post in thread: 24V or 48V Server Rack?

Use the max button, turn on your loads and it will show you the max, aka the surge rush.
  • Post in thread: To buss bar or not to buss bar

It's not just about the ability to add additional batteries/banks, it's also about cost efficiency and wiring cleanliness. A bus bar gives a single source for either negative or positive electrons, saving cable, and allows you to tap the bar for the potential to run multiple devices such as...
  • Post in thread: 48 volt power supply for Raspberry pi

  • Post in thread: New SolArk 12K, X2, issues/glitches..

As @400bird mentioned in his suggestion, sometimes the actual cause of an issue is the most unlikely guess. Testing them individually seems like a good starting point, if they behave differently then you have a baseline to show that the two units are not equal in their behavior. These are...
  • Post in thread: Does Growatt make stackable inverters?

They're all inverter LG, Mitsubishi, and Mirage mini split units. They all soft start by design, but I'm certainly aware of the big outdoor units that many American homes have and the current inrush.
  • Post in thread: Question about battery bank size

I presume this can be estimated with a calculation. If you have 500 amp hours, and you use 200 of them, at a maximum of 40 amps charging it would take 5 hours to recharge those batteries back to 100% assuming no loads are consuming some of your maximum 40 amps charging capacity. As the other...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark, EG4 Communications Hub/LifePower4 - Solar Assistant configuration

The batteries in my system do not communicate with the Sol-Ark, the batteries communicate with the CommHub and the Hub talks to the Sol-ark using CAN Bus. The Pi to the batteries is what you mentioned, RS485 to USB. Or specifically this cable from Signature Solar. Here is a picture that shows...
  • Post in thread: Does this schematic look right?

I would update your picture "the whole picture" and post it back again for one last review.
  • Post in thread: Does Growatt make stackable inverters?

Well, I guess I'll have to suggest moving outside the Growatt line. Regarding the inverters, I'm very much aware of the games companies play with numbers. At least the 15K can provide 15 kW during solar hours, whereas the EG4 doesn't get a boost while generating solar and stays fixed at 12 kW...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark, EG4 Communications Hub/LifePower4 - Solar Assistant configuration

I think you might have misunderstood what I said, you can see multiple batteries in a single-battery array. What you can't do is see for example an SOK and a EG4 LL battery's details in SA at the same time. You have to choose one protocol or the other for different manufacturers/types. When...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K idle consumption

We’ll I got a special deal through a friend of mine that is a solar installer. My Sol-Ark 15K was $5500, plus tax.
  • Post in thread: Looking for a replacement BMS for an EG4 LifePower4 48 volt battery

@OffGridForGood If you want to be able to quickly see the cell voltages/balance from a phone, my best idea is to use Solar Assistant (SA) and or Home Assistant (HA) in conjunction with SA. Home Assistant Solar Assistant it's not exactly the voltage of every cell, but it's a great overview.
  • Post in thread: EG4 Lifepower4 48V Top Balancing Firmware.

Done, I adjusted it up to 56.6
  • Post in thread: Solar assistant: do you use it?

Yes, especially on the EG4 Lifepower4 batteries, even with the updated firmware they must see at least .5 amps to register discharge.
  • Post in thread: Where can I buy just a few 700+ watt panels in US

You might also be able to call a supplier like GreenTech Renewables and see if they have any partial pallets of panels. Typically they'll give a discount on those and "sometimes" let you purchase individually.
  • Post in thread: Charge 24V system with 48V

Posting my solution for everyone else. I was able to get the Orion hooked up to the generator relay on my Cerbo S GX and trigger it based on SOC to enable and slowly feed 5A max from my 48V system into the 24V system and charge up the batteries. Here are the videos to show my setup and see the...
  • Post in thread: Cost of LFP batteries in USA

This guy is pretty reliable and does his research. Might be worth giving this a watch.
  • Post in thread: EG4 Lifepower4 48V Top Balancing Firmware.

Well the guy from Signature Solar who was active on this thread never followed up, I have no idea if this issue is actually been communicated to the appropriate people for consideration. Any ideas on how to get an official bug/glitch/defect reported and logged with EG4?
  • Post in thread: EG4 Communications Hub (Best Practice)

I have 2x racks of 6x EG4 LifePower4 batteries, I'm using the Communications Hub and I'm wondering if there is a preference for connecting the batteries to the Hub. For example: the manual for the Hub says that each RS485 port 1&2 can handle 15 batteries. Since the batteries, 6 each are in...
  • Post in thread: 24V or 48V Server Rack?

Honestly, it's a lot of complexity for something that could probably be easier done with a nice Honda Generator. I know it's not as "Green" but you're running a business and this system will most likely be troublesome to get out of it what you intend to do with it.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark, EG4 Communications Hub/LifePower4 - Solar Assistant configuration

In the battery settings of Solar Assistant “SA” choose the Victron option. This will tell SA to track SOC, voltage, current etc from the Victron Shunt. You don’t see the actual Victron interface, you simply see the values from the shunt.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark, EG4 Communications Hub/LifePower4 - Solar Assistant configuration

A couple points of clarification for consideration. Solar Assistant (SA) can only communicate with one source at a time for battery information. If I want to view the data from the Victron shunt, I have to stop the connection in SA, and switch the USB input selection to the port the Victron...

  • Post in thread: All-In-WTF (AIW) - AIO Design Disasters ...

In that specific line you quoted, I was attempting to say that it's not generally in dispute that LF inverters are excellent for inductive loads. It was an assumption about the experience level of forum members and solar folks. If "we" don't all know, there's plenty of information available...

  • Post in thread: Self-heating battery: Problematic behaviour?

The small current shouldn’t hurt the battery since it’s very minimal and temporary. What is most likely to happen is the battery may continue to discharge to unhealthy levels if you can not get a warm enough temperature to charge the battery. Since you’re in a loop situation you’re gonna have...
