  • Post in thread: Grounding a stand alone sub panel

I'm in a similar situation as OP and could also benefit from clarification (I'm shining the timselectric bat signal). I have an off grid system with a Victron Multiplus II 48/3000 inverter with the AC out back feeding 120v into a sub panel (6 spaces, 12 circuits). I have a small 2600W floating...

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time! Perfect - I didn't know this. Getting the Starlink dish mounted in a clear location is going to be another challenge, but I'm trying to not think too much about that one just yet lol. ? I've been looking at 12v wifi routers, along with powering...
  • Post in thread: Grounding a stand alone sub panel

Unfortunately I don't have an updated diagram handy. I'll try to explain in words. I have 3 ground bus bars across my system: Outside in my MNPV6 combiner box. PV is bonded here and this bus bar is connected to a grounding plate. My DC panel ground bus bar is bonded to the outside ground bus...
  • Post in thread: EG4LL Fire Suppression Modules

To be honest, I don't know. The device itself only has the one cable coming out of it. At the end of the cable there's like a shiny rubber nub that looks like the type of thing that will melt and trigger the reaction. If there is a way to connect electronics to it, I'm not sure what it is. It...

You can buy similar devices on AliExpress: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mNOzTiU. I put one of these in my DIY battery box.
  • Post in thread: Off grid system upgrade

I have recently acquired a small off-grid 3 season cottage/cabin. The cottage has a rudimentary solar set up that was installed by the previous owner that I’m looking to upgrade. The property has a few constraints (lots of trees, no direct south facing mount point) that are making the design of...
  • Post in thread: Horsefly's 2nd Cabin battery build

Thanks. I got concerned by this thread: https://diysolarforum.com/threads/aluminum-heat-spreader-in-direct-cell-contact.80384/ but I do think my fears are overblown and there should not be any problem putting the cells directly on top of the aluminum plate, as they do have a thin layer of...
  • Post in thread: The "ultimate" Starlink setup - Take ideas from it and expand as you see fit!

This is what I’m doing. I replaced the Starlink router with a POE injector connected to my battery. My battery absorbs at 55.2V but I believe the limit for the dish is 57V. However my cable run is so long (190ft or so) that the dish won’t be seeing that voltage.
  • Post in thread: Who here has the best dump load management system going on?

If you're using Victron Venus OS and a software dev, I can imagine that you could build something quite elegant with the amount of data available. Basically any data that is displayed on the console UI is available to a custom application. You could have some simple logic that just enables a...
  • Post in thread: Beware of the APEXIUM BOX Connectors

Yeah, fair enough. In my case I don’t expect to have anywhere close to 200A running through those wires.
  • Post in thread: Horsefly's 2nd Cabin battery build

@Horsefly this battery build has served as the inspiration for my own insulated battery box, it's really great. One question - did you add anything between the aluminum heating plate and the cells?
  • Post in thread: Grounding and Starlink

I've recently installed Starlink at my off-grid cottage, however the number of trees cause a large number of obstructions for the dish. I've seen some videos on Youtube of people mounting their dishes in trees and I think this is my best option. I've reached out to a local arborist who will take...
  • Post in thread: How much data is transmitted by your system? Trying to figure out IOT SIM card likely usage

It's probably not entirely useful for you, but my Victron Cerbo GX has used 5.69MB of data in the past 24 hours.
  • Post in thread: LiFePO Battery internal resistance test

Thanks for the reply Skypower! This is exactly it! I haven’t put my system into service yet, but as I measure all of these individual components I’m adding it all up in my head, and it’s not nothing. Yeah, I get this. I'm not even looking for an accurate comparison - more about whether I'm in...
  • Post in thread: Happened again, DIY battery fire

This would be a great post for the Danger Zone! forum!
  • Post in thread: Off Grid Cottage Upgrade

I haven't - and this is something I would love to test. I'll have to do some research to see how!
  • Post in thread: Built a simple temperature controller

While waiting for my custom insulated metal battery box to be built, I decided to build a custom temperature controller. I'm planning on heating an aluminum plate which the cells will sit on. Rather than use heating pads, I bought 5m of 15ohm heating wire on Ali Express for $6 and received it...
  • Post in thread: LiFePO Battery internal resistance test

I'm in the process of crimping cables to set up my system and this picture is very helpful as a basis of comparison (assuming those labels on your lugs are what I think they are). @Skypower are those the labels on your lugs and busbars the resistance values of the cables in milliohms? I'm using...
  • Post in thread: Grounding a stand alone sub panel

As I understand it, it will disable the N/G bond completely. Otherwise, the relay will disable the N/G bond when the AC input is active. I haven't actually done this yet, so can't speak authoritatively. My system is currently so over provisioned I don't even think I need a generator.
  • Post in thread: How much data is transmitted by your system? Trying to figure out IOT SIM card likely usage

I have VRM set to "realtime" updates and it does include BMS stats.
  • Post in thread: EG4LL Fire Suppression Modules

What I assume is that the cable is triggered by the heat of the fire (170C, according to the specs).
  • Post in thread: Grounding and Starlink

Thanks for all the feedback folks, this is helpful. Isn’t it though? Starlink is powered by POE coming from my battery, which is bonded to my house ground through the shielded ethernet cable. If the dish is also bonded to the pole, wouldn’t adding a ground rod at the tree create a ground loop...
  • Post in thread: Aluminum heat spreader in direct cell contact?

I'm also planning on using an aluminum plate as a heat spreader for my DIY battery box, also using EVE 304 cells. Under what conditions would you expect the shell cases to short? The cell spec sheet says: I understand this to mean that each cell is wrapped with 0.11mm of polyethylene...
  • Post in thread: Off grid system upgrade

Yes - I'm the same way. The plan is to install Starlink once the new system is in place, and hopefully I can generate enough power so that it can run 24/7 while I'm away, as well as maybe power a camera or two. Yeah, I do think it's a bit overkill, but I'm trying to plan for a future where...
  • Post in thread: Victron is Over-priced Eurotrash. Why would anybody buy Victron over an AiO?

I would. I’m using the same wire ducts in my cottage install, but my baseline load is very low so I feel comfortable using them. I’m pretty sure that these wire ducts are intended for low voltage applications. I’m not actually sure how you would calculate the wire ampacity rating for 50C -...
