  • Post in thread: I have a question about heat pumps. Can somebody tell me if this is a stupid idea? Why heat pumps dont work like this?

I believe you're missing the concept that whatever energy is released, has to first be created by the original compressor. If you increase the load on the compressor by restricting the expansion outflow nothing is gained and efficiency losses increase, all one has done is reduce in cycle...
  • Post in thread: Lifepo4 Bomb

This may help you understand. Most PWM are multi stage, but I suspect your PWM doesn't have a lifep04 mode, which if it didi, would only do a bulk charge and stop. This video I believe covers the issue that when the charger goes into Absorb or Float, it is a rapid on/off ( could be as slow in...
  • Post in thread: My EG4 server rack batteries don't fit in the EG4 battery rack.

Try the brackets rotated 180 degrees, so the 90 degree bend is up, not down as you have
  • Post in thread: I have a question about heat pumps. Can somebody tell me if this is a stupid idea? Why heat pumps dont work like this?

If your taking energy from the expansion, it won't be as cool and the compressor will have to work harder ( longer ) for same BTU's needed. Do some reading on entropy for a better understanding.
  • Post in thread: What do you use for asphalt shingle roof penetration?

The roof penetration and all interior runs must be metal, not plastic to meet code, that why I and others use the higher dollar box with flashing for zero leaks and emt stub thru the roof.
  • Post in thread: Looking to power HVAC

Get a quote from a local contractor to blow in 12" over the 3.5" roll in you likely have, this by far will be the best payback for investment. Typically its $1000-2000 depending on square footage of the home. Doing it yourself won't be lower cost as the contractor gets bulk pricing on the...
  • Post in thread: Does Solar Pay for Itself? Is it worth it?

There are worse ways to throw money at than RE projects
  • Post in thread: UL Batteries

It's not California thing, its NEC 2020 for UL9540 requirements, which is currently in force for 28 states with another 7 or so states to be updated by the end of this year. This is the source for those that wish to know current NEC adoption status for all states.
  • Post in thread: Trying to find a LARGE storage system with 2.5 MWh capacity

At this scale is only choice, Tesla is the only choice
  • Post in thread: Breaker to din rail

Yes, you are suppose to use end locks to keep in place
  • Post in thread: UL Batteries

For area's in NEC 2020 adopted, it must be UL9540 certified system and additionally for CA on their approved CEC list. 40 out of 50 US States by years end will be on NEC2020 and DYI ESS will not be a legal option, such as buying random batteries / inverters, only those with UL9540 certified...
  • Post in thread: Use of Flexible Non Metallic Conduit Inside

PV energy is not regulated / switched from the roof, IE if there is Sun, there is energy which if there is a short inside the conduit, there will be flames/fire that cannot be extinguished and with plastic will burn through the conduit, then the home potentially.
  • Post in thread: isolation of battery to inverter comms

All Solis Hybrid's are non-isolated to the battery connections similar to the PV connections. So having a power supply off the battery will have significant voltage potential to ground. I own the High Voltage Hybrid, but the Low Voltage Hybrids are the same architecture
  • Post in thread: BMS cable lengths - same length?

No need for equal length, they only sense voltage and wire length doesn't effect the readings as such low currents.
  • Post in thread: Autotransformer vs Paralleled Inverters for 220v

The Solis ATR can handle full rated current on a single leg, so it isn't a rule for all, it what you choose to purchase.
  • Post in thread: Is this a shorted panel

looks like a factory second, the busbar is misaligned, likely won't make any measurable difference in performance
  • Post in thread: Battery monitor not showing any charge has occurred. Bad Batteries?

Yes, Once you have completed a full charge, reset the monitor to something a bit less than the rated Ah of your battery pack, and moving forward it should track the Ah in and out showing net remaining capacity. Keep in mind, the monitor can't account for self discharge, efficiency losses of...
  • Post in thread: Solar Panels Undercharging

Assuming the 100 watt panels are ~ 20 Volts VOC, two strings of 5 panels in series, these two strings in parallel. Yes you will have an odd one left over.
  • Post in thread: NYSERDA

If you want to get away from the inverter limits and possible later expansion this is an option, Solis S6 11.4kw hybrid , can get three for price of a one 15K Solark. Each one has 4, 600V capable independent mppt channels and when used for storage they can be paralleled. I have one running for...
  • Post in thread: Fortress high voltage ESS solution

Its the next generation Solis S6, which is still in development and the replacement for the Solis 5G HVES. Solis does do branding of their products, for example the Solis 4G gridtie products have sunrun badging as they are a large user/installer of the products for residential installations.
  • Post in thread: Half cell panels... do they not play well with MPPT charge controllers?

Half cut, perc mono are the best panels on the market, nothing is better and there is no reason mppt would not work well. I have a roof full of them ( 28 panels ) and get great harvest with them. Santan is a good place to buy from as well, that is where mine are from
  • Post in thread: Series string shading summed up in 4 pictures

They work, they trade voltage for current to match the remaining string. A colleague has his own large system similar in size to mine and has allot of data logging and shading. While they do work, things can get finicky just as you a have seen as the electronics harvesting energy from the...
  • Post in thread: A shared array is causing insulation resistance error? - Help diagnosing a weird project.

A huge NO, the owner would be lucky equipement hasn't failed. Solar panels cannot be "shared", and with almost all current AIO inverters the are not isolated this would end instantly in a shower of sparks and flames. Restore the array ( remove the "Y" connectors splitters ) and hope for the...
  • Post in thread: Schneider XW vs Sol-Ark

Actually its ( Sol-Ark and its cousins ) are "special", even in the US most split-phase storage inverters are single-phase, such as Solis, Goodwe, StoreEdge, Generac and Enphase off the top of my head that use auto-transformers for neutral requirements aka split phase.. Also the concept that...
  • Post in thread: Post your Solar Software, and best Solar Day!

I use a platform I built, python script running on a NAS to pull data ( about 200 values each pass ) via modbus TCP on the inverter, and http scraping on the BYD battery status pages from my pair of Solis 5G Hybrid inverters, each has ~5.5kw of solar, one has a 10kw BYD batterybox. Data is...
  • Post in thread: Series string shading summed up in 4 pictures

Bypass diodes only conduct when the solar is blocked in the series of cells, in normal operation they are in effect not part of the circuit, with or without an optimizer attached
  • Post in thread: Need electrician in Tampa Florida area for DIY solar permit.

Call and make an appointment with the permit reviewer, they work for you on your tax dollars, be polite and professional but NOT scared to question what they say. Your PE that stamped the plans should be able to help as well as they should know the Florida building codes.
  • Post in thread: To Bi-Facial or not Bi-Facial

One nit pick on the video. The original panels of the array are mono, but not half cut cells, that is a big difference, half cuts have lower voltage loss and less effected by heat. The tested bifacial are half-cut. My arrays are half-cut ( not bifacial ) and is the best performing array I...
  • Post in thread: Gut check - am I crazy?

Whatever you do, only purchase listed, 1st tier products. Cheap might be ok for learning project, but not running whole home single source of power. Also are you including racking, wiring and allowance for equipment replacements or repairs costs? Also you need a backup solution as things WILL...
