  • Post in thread: Connecting Neutral & Ground from Generator to Home

I like your solution, when I first saw that original wiring I stumped as to how that could possibly work, It is way not code to float the neutral, no way could that be legal as to the NEC, It was a compromise to use the non safe 10-50 connector that is used in an R.V. Stoves and dryers used to...
  • Post in thread: My solar panels dont have bypass diodes!

Real easy to tell if there are bypass diodes...shade 2 longwise rows....if voltage goes down but current stays same, you do have bypass diodes, if both current and voltage goes down you do not have bypass diodes
  • Post in thread: How many C's can forklift battery take

We tried that in Alaska on the family homestead, no if they are dead bringing them inside they were still dead , but better able to accept recharging
  • Post in thread: Shame me but teach me too!

I will cover one thing for you....AC breakers are rated for AC only, do not be tempted to use them for DC...AC goes on and off 120 times per second, plenty of low current flows times to extinguish an arc...DC does not go on and off so an AC breaker does not have a chance of extinguishing a DC...

Customer support is why I did not consider Schneider, chose different vendor that had customer support. Unfortunately Schneider decided not to support end users, only registered installers.
  • Post in thread: DC Circuit Breaker Fires!!

I have seen many of those, they light up my Fluke FLIR....I only use Buss brand in that style of breaker, Blue Seas are standard off the shelf Buss/Littlefuse. They just work.
  • Post in thread: What happened to the 24v DIY system web page?

I have no dought that California codes are enforced far harder than North Carolina, here roor top solar wiring must be in steel conduit, in NYC plastic is accepted.
  • Post in thread: DC Circuit Breaker Fires!!

Circuit breaker arc flash fires are caused by poor arc chute design or incorrect current flow in the breaker Also by using an AC rated breaker on a DC circuit Some (old standard) DC breakers are polarity sensitive, there is only one acceptable current flow direction Current certification is...
  • Post in thread: Quality vs China MPPT?

I was not replying to your reply, I have never had the 50 amp version, the only one that I saw in operation was a 30 amp, 150 volt version that could not be programmed to properly charge a set of Rolls Surette S-550 L-16’s directly due to the fact that no bluetooth device or Victron programmer...

  • Post in thread: What happened to the 24v DIY system web page?

Here 48 volt on charge is considered to be maximum 60 volts so it is required here, We have the toughest codes in the Country. Basically California has upped the NEC by dissecting it and issuing the CEC which fine tunes the NEC. The CEC is based on the NEC but published one year later so the...
  • Post in thread: BestSun Powerwall

You found just what i did, I got mine from a new installation where it failed to do what it was sold to do on day one. I have scrapped the unit as a whole, the inverter/charger is a mpp unit, the batteries are unknowns, the BMS is the cheapest Daly i have seen on alibaba, the cells are surplus...
  • Post in thread: Giandel NO Ground-Neutral Bonding

@roadrunner please tell me just what kind of main panel feeds your mobile home....I need the brand, type, meter/main combo, or subpanel and breaker spaces. I just may have a fix that will do this. Square D makes a small panel which can be equipped as a transfer panel that will meet the codes...

  • Post in thread: Fooling a grid-tie inverter to provide power without grid.

off grid inverter......no demand no output grid tie inverter....generated as much power as available and assumes that the grid can use it all Grid tie .............grid tie inverters must monitor the grid for 5 minutes and watch voltage and frequency. EDIT: and not output any power until the 5...

  • Post in thread: I Flipped the Switch on my Over Paneled MN Classic & Array Upgrade Today

What that I do know is that boB and Robin are aware of the lithium battery issue and that is on the radar. As far as disconnect at low temperature that is possible (maybe with some software tweaking) using battery bank temperature and the built in auxiliary contacts that can trigger external...
  • Post in thread: Grid-Tie solar power ethics

My local power company is much worse than that which is exactly why I am an off gridder, I do have a 120 volt 30 amp service installed in the 1930’ s and the POCO service is capable of 240 volt 200 amp service but I will not upgrade I must keep that service active to keep a residency permit...
  • Post in thread: My solar panels dont have bypass diodes!

Monocrystalline technology was pioneered by Bell Labs , a wholly owned research arm of American Telephone and Telegraph Co. in the early 1950’s maybe patented in 1952. The very oldest solar cells were manufactured by Western Electric for use by AT&T communications repeater sites and for use...
  • Post in thread: What happened to the 24v DIY system web page?

Technically......The outer sheathing of Romex is a conduit so wiring in protected spaces can be romex but not 3 strands of THHN wire, and the Romex needs to be protected as well, running through holes in the studs and not surface mounted. Here stapling romex on studs is allowed in non occupied...
  • Post in thread: Bus bar instead of combiner box

Ok so here is what is the bad........ you can connect 2 solar panels in parallel or even 2 series strings in parallel, but when you connect more than 3 panels in parallel you need fuses or breakers on each string......WHY..you ask...if one panel in a parallel setup with 3 in parallel shorts the...
  • Post in thread: Interesting what's considered a 'Tier 1' chinese inverter, wonder if Amy would be our purchase agent.

I think that the ranking here is very definitely based on : 1) quality of the equipment 2) quality of the manufacturer 3) willingness of that manufacturer of that support that equipment 4) durability of that equipment 5) service life of that equipment To be Tier 1 you must ace all 5
  • Post in thread: Definition of HF vs LF inverter

The other consideration is that most quality low frequency inverters have a much lower EMI/RFI (electro-magnetic interference)/(radio frequency interference), but that is not always the case. EMI/RFI is a known health hazard and should be avoided if possible. The FCC emission measurements of...
  • Post in thread: 2 MPPT Controllers 1Array

  • Post in thread: Panel cell count

No. normal voltage per cell for monocrystalline and polycrystalline is about .500 volts per cell thus 60 cell panels are about 30 volts at MPP. I have some Sanyo/Panasonic multilayer panels which are monocrystalline with an anamorphic polycrystalline cell on top of the mono cell which are a...
  • Post in thread: Confused wiring a Magnum MS4024pae

Really late but no answers.......YES the MagnaSine MS XXXX AE & PAE models can output 120/240 v.a.c. in feed through mode with only 120 v.a.c. input to L1 and N. First hand expereince here I have a MS4024AE which is the forerunner of the MS4024PAE model and i can verify first hand that they...
  • Post in thread: AC side MPP LV6548 connections, critical load panel, wiring

Looking again, I do not understand why you have a breaker from the main box feeding a breaker in the sub panel. This is not correct as it will directly short the input of the inverter to the output of the inverter. The output of the inverter feeds the main breaker in the sub panel. L1 and L2 of...
  • Post in thread: if a 48V battery can be lethal, how about a 40V panel?

I can feel a 9 volt battery, its just a tingle. Do be aware that certain places on the human body have a much lower resistance than most skin areas, no im not talking about sensetive skin either. Most areas of the body are about 50k when measured with a 10 megohm input impedance DMM .but...

  • Post in thread: 48v Split Phase Stackable Inverter options?

Im not particularly into brand loyalty, but having done a career in high tech industry I certainly do know the difference between tier 1 and consumer grade. Some companies make a superior product and stand behind it and some just sell you a product.

  • Post in thread: Adding mis-matched panels in series?

The current flow will be limited by the lowest panel in the series string so you have a maximum current of 5 amps maximum. It would be much better to use two strings of near equal panels Two strings.... String one.....2 152 watt panels for 38 volts times 8 amps equals .......304 watts String...

  • Post in thread: 400w panel 12v/40ah

The solar panel will be fine as the charge controller will protect the battery from overcharge BUT..... At maximum output you will have approximately 30 amps which is far too much amperage for a 40 a.h. battery, maximum charge rate should be more like 10 amps so you will need to set the...
