James May reviewed the fisker karma back in 2011 on top gear and gave it a favorable review. Then they compared it to the eagle eye thrust. It's when I first heard of fisker, and have been following ever since. As Jeremy Clarkson would say, it's a Fister.
If they made the retractable toneu cover a solar panel, that would have been a pretty sweet move. But instead you can stand on it. So I guess that's cool, too?
I do own Fiskars CEO's old official car, a 1956 Dodge Coronet. I got it museum approved over 30 years ago and it has been about 25 years since last time I have driven it. It's in excellent shape still almost like the one in picture below, but needs a thorough cleaning because of thick dust layer. US cars were kind of rare here back in 50'. Maybe my kids will want it someday.I thought fiskars made gardening implements...
I have a nice axe, hatchet, and shears from them...
I'm told that on a sunny day, it can add 8-10 miles of range. For the lifetime of my vehicle, approximately 2 weeks, I've added 76 miles of range. Its a cool idea and is fun, but not meaningful. I would guess the added complexity and parts, vs the micro savings is why MFGs don't do it.
My EV gets 3 miles per kWh, give or take. The roof area would allow maybe 400 watts. On a good day, I would be adding 5 or 6 miles. Not nothing, but not really meaningful either. But if your car is just an around towner, once in a while, then maybe.
It's fun, and cool, no shade from me. But 77 miles of range over 14 days is 5.5 per day, so pretty close to my estimate.I'm told that on a sunny day, it can add 8-10 miles of range. For the lifetime of my vehicle, approximately 2 weeks, I've added 76 miles of range.
I'll be watching this and see how fast it goes up. Right now it's parked in the sun and generating 63%.
Sure, it might be a gimmick. But it's a gimmick I like.
I'll get some closer pictures. The specs are not released on how much total capacity it is, or what the wattage it is currently generating at. Hopefully in future software updates, that information is coming. Can you take close ups of the solar cell? What's the power rating of the whole thing?
I don't plan to ever use a fast charger, I plan to just leave it on a level 1 all the time. I work from home and sleep from home, so really the only time I drive is after hours. Over the past 4 months I've averaged 25 miles a day for driving, and 35 days i didn't drive at all. The largest distance I've driven in a single day was 98 miles. It's fun, and cool, no shade from me. But 77 miles of range over 14 days is 5.5 per day, so pretty close to my estimate.
Manufacturers tend to be, let's say optimistic when they put specs out there, for anything.
On paper, my Genesis can recharge from 20-80% in 17 minutes or something like that. yeah......no. I've been at 350 super chargers, no other vehicles, in prime environmental conditions, and never got even close to that. So them saying 8-10 miles per day is probably based on a sunny day at the equator on June 22, and you never drive over 37.984 mph
I have a jaguar xkr and my wife has a jaguar e-pace, so I'm vaguely familiar with what jaguar is doing. I'm also not crazy about it. I don't think ICE is going anywhere any time soon, but at the same time, I wanted an EV just to try it out and have fun. But I wanted one that didn't suck, like the nissan leaf, or toyota prius, or tesla *. I was actually considering an electric sxs for the homestead but they're so damned expensive at $20k+, and then I saw the ocean for 37k so I thought, lets try that.Very cool and still Fisker could soon be an orphan.
I am in close to the same boat with my I-Pace as Jaguar is stopping production of all cars for a new high end EV line up.
I would definitely be interested if they made an electric F-type.Very cool and still Fisker could soon be an orphan.
