    Cabin Solar during Winter

Set up two battery banks with a quick connect (like a forklift battery uses). Use one FLA when it is cold and lithium when you can. Be sure to keep them both topped up.

An interesting idea for off grid heat

Wood stoves are awesome for quick heat. I too used one for years in a stone walled farm house. These are meant to be fired hot and hard (1200*F) twice a day. The thermal mass soaks up the heat and releases it back into the house for 12-18 hours. It is a much smoother heat. They are also much...

Why so much stuff? bells whistles or is it needed?

“Rather than driving a car with no doors, no seatbelts, no gas gauge, no windshield, no heater, and no lights” That’s called a Motorcycle?? These are the things that each of us must decide for ourselves.

Why so much stuff? bells whistles or is it needed?

You don’t NEED anything beyond panels, SCC, batteries, and an inverter. It would be wise to add proper fusing. The rest is dependent on your budget, technical knowledge and comfort that everything is working as expected. Remote monitoring is cool, but do YOU need it? Sophisticated controls are...

    Where to find panels

Santan solar. $50 for a used 250W panel. Shipping can be painful unless you split it with a friend or order enough to spread it out.

Idea for an affordable rainwater collector

I’d also worry about animal droppings. A roof system has a “first flush” feature. Tough to do on a system like that.

Panel THEN scc disconnect in one switch?

It’s not so much a “needs” as it is “This is how I want my system set up.” I do technical training and documentation, and this is how I want it done. Thanks for the information though, I wasn’t sure how critical it actually was. Good to know that I won’t let any magic smoke out if I have a...

Panel THEN scc disconnect in one switch?

I am looking to add an extra layer of “stupid proof” to my system. I am looking for a 3 position switch that will disconnect the panels then the scc sequentially. I.E. Position 1-Both on, Position 2-scc on, panels off, Position 3-Both off. I mY not always be the one operating the backup...

need to build a 24v solar system

I plan to use 12 panels, with multiple controllers and separate arrays, pointed slightly different directions. This will also provide redundancy it something fails. Budget dictates the panels will all be purchased together to save on shipping, but the systems will be built separately, as funds...

Excess energy in off grid system

You don’t HAVE to burn up the extra energy, your charge controller will just stop putting it through to the battery. You can use the extra energy wisely. Do high draw chores while the battery is full but the sun is still shining. That way the “extra” power won’t be wasted

    Lead Acid LVD question/idea

I believe that the LVC I sourced has an adjustable hysteresis, so I should be able to minimize the issues. If not, It is on me to size the system/load to suit my needs. As an engineer, I understand that there are trade offs in every design and and willing to accept the ones that I cannot...

    Lead Acid LVD question/idea

The charts i've seen show 12.2 as 50%. the only inverters i've found cut off at 10.5! FAR too low. I'll look into it, and the LVC is adjustable so I can change it as I learn. Thank you

    Lead Acid LVD question/idea

I have been looking for a LVD that I can set to 12.3V. Apparently, that is difficult to find. I’ve searched forums, YouTube, and google to no avail. So, here is my thought. A $15 LVD and a$15 SSR from Amazon to control the inverter on/off.

    New from New Hampshire

Hi, all. I have been watching Will’s videos for about a year now and have finally pulled the trigger on 6 250W panels from Santan Solar. My plan/hope is to build a hand truck portable system with one also and a two panel battery backup system for my furnace/fridge that will be on a garden cart...
