I think the disconnect switch does have to be outside somewhere. As it turns out I had a 200-amp circuit breaker at the meter on the pole outside and that sufficed as the AC Disconnect switch so I didn't need to install one on the house.

The electric meter is on a pole about 25 ft from the house. There is also a 200-amp breaker on the pole. The service panel is inside the house in a small utility room with a washing/drying and water heater.
