Testing: Lead and lithium (LFP) battery banks in parallel

I dumped our LA engine starter batteries 10 years ago replacing them with a 4 cell 300Ah LiFePO4 battery that has started the Canter 3.9l turbo diesel engine perhaps a few thousand times with ease. It also powers the motorhome attached. Lead will never enter our equation again. I have no doubt...

    How non-linear is battery life?

I will let you know when we get there. Our 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly battery has now survived 10 years of fulltime travel being typically depleted about 35% each evening. It also starts the truck engine often multiple times a day. Number of "cycles"? I will leave that to some theorist. Talking...

Wondering why're many people still building 12/24v system ?

I will stick with 12V for a while yet thanks. Our 10 year old 4 cell LiFePO4 battery both powers our MH and starts the 3.9l turbo diesel engine often several times a day. A 48V - 12V 730A peak current converter could be tricky. The 255l 230V fridge, TV, coffee maker, toaster, jug, Instant Pot...

    State of charge chart

I can only give numbers for our 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly LiFePO4 battery that has survived 10 years of full time travel. Two paralleled shunt based battery monitors, Victron SmartShunt and $50 Junctek agree with each other. They are either relatively accurate or less likely both inaccurate by...

GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

Pretty much the same. 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly LiFePO4 battery. 50A Solar controller, 80A alternator and 30A mains charger all limited to 14.10V maximum. According to my two shunt based battery monitors the pack is always at 100% SOC once the terminals reach 14.1V regardless of charge current...

    DIY battery longevity

To add to my previous post re our 10 year old 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly battery. No charge source exceeds 14.1V at which point the battery is always at 100% SOC regardless of charging current. Absorption time has proved unnecessary but continues while driving. Increasing the battery terminal voltage...

    DIY battery longevity

Cycle counts for partial daily draws? I have serious doubts about accurate counting via any method. Our battery is now approaching 3800 days of supplying somewhere in the region of 115Ah or 1.5 KWh overnight while the sun does not shine. Someone else is welcome to perform any cycle maths. Our...

WOW! Absorption fridge vs compressor fridge

An old thread but no contest for us. I will simply requote a post of mine a few days ago in another thread: I understand that a few here detest Samsung but 10 years ago I replaced our 175l 3-way with a 230V Domestic 255l (9 cu ft) Samsung Digital Inverter fridge/freezer. It is powered by a...

Winston LiYFePO4 400Ah - has anyone reviewed them?

No Winston's but our very similar 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly LiFePO4 battery pack has now survived 10 years of full time travel both powering the motorhome and starting the 3.9l turbo diesel engine often multiple times a day. I perform an annual C/10 capacity test each November. Converted to Ah the...

What else does your ‘Vehicle Mounted System’ do for you?

For the last 10 years of full-time travelling the solar energy fed to our LiFePO4 battery has managed to run everything in the motorhome from jug to induction cooker to fridge to toaster to Instant Pot to occasional water cylinder heating, started the 3.9l TD diesel engine a few thousand times...

    Fridge advice and guidance.

I understand that a few here detest Samsung but 10 years ago I replaced our 175l 3-way with a 230V Domestic 255l (9 cu ft) Samsung Digital Inverter fridge/freezer. It is powered by a dedicated US$60 300W 230AC PSW inverter mounted behind the fridge. Both the fridge and inverter running 24/7 have...

How to measure state of charge with lifepo4?

I have a $60 400A Juntek and 500A Victron SmartShunt with dedicated old android phone monitoring our battery setup. While being a long time a Victron user I must admit that the Junctek is my GOTO unit for day to day use. Either both are inaccurate or I can rely on the numbers. They always agree...

Are lithium ion batteries better than lead acid?

As mentioned earlier I occasionally measure cell voltages to ensure runaway is not occurring. No OCDc. I live with the cells very close and keep an eye on things. The battery monitors help. The 9 year old 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly LiFePO4 battery shows no physical signs of bulging and still looks...

Are lithium ion batteries better than lead acid?

Typical and repeatable captured battery monitor peak starter motor current draw. I have no method of recording the average. At c12.2V engine starting usually takes less than a second.

Are lithium ion batteries better than lead acid?

I would have used the existing Victron SmartShunt anyway. The Junctek was cheap and accurate and I refer to it every day. Find me an affordable and reliable (guaranteed not to fail in 9 years) internal BMS that can survive this 2 or 3 times a day and I could be interested. My homebuilt...

Are lithium ion batteries better than lead acid?

No charging source exceeds 14.1V at which point the battery is always at 100% SOC regardless of charge current according to both the Victron SmartShunt and Junctek battery monitors. Alternator c75A, solar up to 50A and rarely used battery charger 30A. Noisy alarm at 14.4V, 20% SOC and Victron...

Are lithium ion batteries better than lead acid?

""better" at starting""? The equation will be different if your batteries are regularly subject to freezing temperatures. We dumped our 2 huge paralled LA start batteries 9 years ago. Our 4 cell 300Ah LiFePO4 battery has now survived more than 9 years of full-time travelling in our motorhome...

Many here say that an alternator should not be connected to LiFePO4 and that one should use DC-DC Charger

My previous post: https://diysolarforum.com/threads/many-here-say-that-an-alternator-should-not-be-connected-to-lifepo4-and-that-one-should-use-dc-dc-charger.53318/page-4#post-714171 It has now all survived 9 years of full-time travels and still faultless. No DC-DC charger involved.

JuncTek Battery Monitor vs Victron SmartShunt

The Junctek battery monitor is easily A & V calibrated via their app in 1% steps. After slight tweaking both my Junctek and Victron SmartShunt agree within 0.01V, 0.02A and 1 or occasionally 2% SOC across the entire usual battery levels.

JuncTek Battery Monitor vs Victron SmartShunt

Unfortunately no WiFi involved but I have followed a few clever users of the previous KGxxx models who have persevered with output protocol details and achieved some amazing results. e.g. https://diysolarforum.com/threads/rs-485-porn-on-junteks-monitors.45797...

JuncTek Battery Monitor vs Victron SmartShunt

    2. The Bluetooth module is located in the main module mounted near the shunt unit. It all still performs fine without the display via the app. 3. Untested but I had no success with the previous Juntek wireless model. We use an old phone permanently mounted up front in our motorhome to display...

    How active balancers work.

I'm still waiting for someone to inform me what cell balancing actually achieves for a typical small setup user. Have cell manufacturing methods deteriorated so much over the years that it is now mandatory? For our battery the few seconds at 10A required for perfect cell balance numbers cannot...

    Dual Purpose LiFePO4?

Fortunatrly we don't all experience serious freezing conditions. Here in NZ the coldest night ever was -10°C (14°F) but the battery case temperature was still 6°C in the morning and by travel time the battery accepted the full 80A alternator charge as usual. Our 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly LiFePO4...

lifepo4 end of life at 70% capacity

I may have to wait a while. Our 4 cell 300Ah Sinopoly LiFePO4 battery has survived 9 years of fulltime travel in the motorhome with a capacity loss in Ah from the initial 315 to just 299 at the last annual C/10 capacity test last month. I suspect that mysterious death from "old age" will likely...

JuncTek Battery Monitor vs Victron SmartShunt

The display is not really configurable but it displays all the information I require for day-to-day use. It also stores data but the Victron SmartShunt wins for historic data retrieval. Total Ah ever used? No. Ah used? Both the head unit and app display show Ah remaining. My battery capacity is...

JuncTek Battery Monitor vs Victron SmartShunt

I have both the Junctek and a 500A Victron SmartShunt installed in series. A dedicated wall mounted android phone displays Victron and Junctek data. Both always agree within 1% V&A and 1-2% SOC. Most of my gear is Victron but I must admit to preferring the Junctek display for everyday use.

GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

Despite all the theories, papers and forum posts read over many years our battery has never required balancing since the original careful top balance. In the meantime we will continue to use our 9 year old 300Ah 4 cell Sinopoly LiFePO4 battery to both power the house and start our motorhome...

    Are Winston cells worth it?

I'm not certain that matching was a thing 9 years ago. Purchased strapped together with two hose clip style stainless steel bands. Still zero visual case swelling. From memory the cell barcode numbers are not sequential. I will check tomorrow.
