    Dirty Grid Power - Recommendations

I realize this is an old thread, but it popped up when searching for a different thread and I realized nobody else had my insights on this subject. If you really want protection from dirty power, voltage fluctuations and short dropouts, the best solution has been around for decades. A...

Current levels make the difference. Signals in phones are measured in mA. Inverters in 100's of amps.

Power Factor What Does It Mean

The phrase rms Watts is a misnomer since Watts when referring to AC is ALWAYS rms, anything other than this is simply someone trying to sell something. The problems is unscrupulous companies have used the term "watts" in wildly incorrect ways when overstating the capabilities of devices they are...

Power Factor What Does It Mean

RMS and Power factor are for AC power. There is no such thing as RMS Watts for DC. When converting units it is a good idea to include all of the units in the calculation and cancel out units as you multiply or divide by other units. V/V, A/A or W/W cancel that unit out. If you don't end up with...

I can't even express the right words....

My first on-line (BBS) experience was with a glass teletype with a 300 baud acoustic modem you had to manually dial the BBS number then insert the handset into the couple cups. The one I had, used an 80 character x 25 line display. This one prints on paper!

Power Factor What Does It Mean

RMS is a way of equating AC power to the DC heating equivalent assuming the power factor = 1.0. This is based on heat rise measured in a non-inductive resistor. What this really means is that RMS only means anything for purely resistive loads which is virtually never the case in real life. When...

Must Read: EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) or leaking current/ voltage, and why you need to be aware

Are you using cables between the battery and the inverter? You can get clamp on cores that will work with round cables or flat bars. You will want to locate these as close to the inverter as possible.

Must Read: EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) or leaking current/ voltage, and why you need to be aware

Did ferrite cores on the DC cables feeding the inverter make any difference? I would be willing to bet that is how the RFI is radiating out of the inverters.

Amazing length of time walking after a 2300V arc flash

Sad. I used with work with guys like these when I installed process control systems. I did see an operator get across a pair of 480V bus links. He didn't die (the discharge was through his forearm), but he was mess up. They were getting inside a control cabinet to do "stuff" through a...

Why you cannot charge LiFePO4 below 0 degrees Celsius

A powerwall is a packaged system that includes the battery and all required support circuitry. Systems can include the inverter and chargers. Makes sense a powerwall would include a heating system to permit charging below freezing.

Why you cannot charge LiFePO4 below 0 degrees Celsius

Operating temperature range, as in you can draw power from it to -20? Charge? Not without a heater which it could have since this is not a battery, its a Powerwall type product.

    DC and AC wiring

Mixing DC and AC wiring is permitted, but you have to meet double insulated requirements. Loose wiring can be in shrink tubing, or you can use jacketed cables.

Do North American electricians test impedance?

If you are referring to neutral to ground impedance, it is easier to just measure AC voltage between the neutral and ground. It should be < 2VAC when pulling a heavy load from an outlet. Trying to measure ohms on AC wiring is difficult unless you kill power to the entire house. Otherwise power...

Do North American electricians test impedance?

Or are you referring to high pot testing? We high pot test 100% of the load cells we manufacture at work. The quality of your question has a huge impact on the quality of the answers you are going to get.

Do North American electricians test impedance?

Could you give us just a bit of background. I don't want to go watch a bunch of videos hoping to stumble across what you are specifically referring to. Troubleshooting and repair, possibly depends on symptoms. Installing a ground rod, yes. Otherwise, generally no.

    RV Air Conditioner tripping Inverter

A hard start is to deal with a specific condition in compressors. It does make it possible to start motors on an inverter that you would not otherwise be able to, but it is the opposite of a soft start (full current for a shorter period) and this puts more stress on the motor and gear train (if...

I would vote for the UP position. Man, it would really suck if the OP designed that lovely case to go into a place where it has to be located in the upright position like shown.

8 100AH lithium ion phosphate batteries, what is the best configuration bus for the battery bank for the batteries to survive long term?

Smaller capacity cells are more resistant to physical damage. If you are driving on rough roads, you may see a decrease in battery life.

8 100AH lithium ion phosphate batteries, what is the best configuration bus for the battery bank for the batteries to survive long term?

Sorry, I thought you had 8 cells and was making a joke. So do you have 8), 100 AH 12V batteries? I didn't get that from your post. How large of an inverter do you plan on using? If it is over 3K I would definitely do a 24V system. Under that, put them all in parallel for a 12V system. What...

8 100AH lithium ion phosphate batteries, what is the best configuration bus for the battery bank for the batteries to survive long term?

All eight in parallel for 3.2V, 1000Ah pack. No need to worry about balancing. Finding an inverter that will run off 3.2V, now that is the question.

    Marooned in the desert

I live in Phoenix AZ (not in an off-grid RV). I love camping and try to keep myself acclimated to the climate. So I sit out on my patio after work. Through summer. That little swamp cooler on wheels is how I am able to do it. Uses a lot of water so not sure how useful it is for dispersed...
