  • Post in thread: Complex solar integration concerns for a motorhome

I plan to add a solar energy source to my older motorhome but the OEM energy management system is creating a concern about this addition. These older motorhome have a so called BCC (battery control center) which is a solid state manager for the charging inputs from shore power, engine...

...... I am still very much in the information gathering phase of this project. The RV I am working with is a 1999 model year so the technology isn't very current (pardon the pun). It has a starter (chassis) battery, a house battery bank (currently 2 X 6v golf cart batteries). The coach has...
  • Post in thread: How to wire new system on Sprinter RV that already charges house from generator when engine is running?

Thank you for this information! I have seen what the vendors call "drop-in" LFP replacement batteries. Do they have some kind of internal component that deals with the different charge profile and the alternator protection issue?
  • Post in thread: How to wire new system on Sprinter RV that already charges house from generator when engine is running?

This would seem to create a significant liability issue for the manufacturer. I can't see that happening.
  • Post in thread: Mixed battery type charging

Having researched my Motor Home's Battery Control Center (BCC) unit (F73-1020) I have discovered that there is a dynamic battery-charging priority logic built into this BCC. This logic provides that the system gives charge priority to the chassis (starter) battery when the engine alternator is...

This: https://www.power-sonic.com/blog/how...po4-batteries/ And Will often speaks to the issue of selecting battery type with various charge controllers and battery chargers.
  • Post in thread: NOT-solar charge controller

Following... I think what the OP and I want is an add-on for our dumb, high current battery chargers. I don't see why any of the BCC
  • Post in thread: Complex solar integration concerns for a motorhome

The BCC is a RV Custom Products unit which is common to most Fleetwood motorhomes. The consultant from RV Custom Products suggests connecting the solar charge controller directly to the house batteries, but that the critical issue is the charge voltage setting which should not exceed 13.6 volts...
  • Post in thread: Cons of 48v setup for RV?

How have you resolved the high current requirement of the leveling Jack's?? I have the same concern for my RV installation plan.
  • Post in thread: Cons of 48v setup for RV?

A separate 12v battery for the jacks and maybe the slides seems like an overly complicated approach to the issue. 24v hydraulic pumps are used in marine applications and changing out the 12v motor for a 24v motor might be an option although I couldn't resource that change on any online resource...

Ongoing research reveals that your are right about staying with 12v for the house system. I was concerned about having to run expensive heavy gauge wire from the solar panels to the battery bay, but there are a number of charge controllers which can accept a high voltage input and convert it to...
  • Post in thread: Complex solar integration concerns for a motorhome

That's another thing... the alternator is a rather poor source of charging because of its low current capacity and the need to protect it's output limit when supplying lithium batteries. I'll have to also review the capacity and programability of the OEM converter charge points for...
  • Post in thread: Mixed battery type charging

Yes, I think that integrating a modern LiFePO4 charge controller with the old school Battery Control Center (BCC) unit (F73-1020) by Rv Custom Products is going to be the challenge. Adding an inverter will add to the complexity. I think I'll write to them and see what they have to say...
  • Post in thread: How to wire new system on Sprinter RV that already charges house from generator when engine is running?

I see that nobody ever answered this question. I have the same concerns with my motorhome. I want to add solar + lithium house battery to the system that currently has shore power/genset/alternator power sources to charge Pb-acid house and chassis batteries. The OEM battery charge center...

I think my 1999 controller still has vacuum tubes in it! Certainly I don't see any data ports.
