  • Post in thread: what brand PV wire is best for long run ?

If you are going direct burial then thhn/thwn won't work because neither is rated for direct burial. Not sure if the windy nation wire you reference is direct burial rated. 10-2 ufb cable is common at most "depot" stores and is DB rated. It will have 3 conductors. If you only need 2 per run ...
  • Post in thread: EG4's in split phase output

Any chance the pv wires have been transposed? + and - from different arrays to single inverter input.
  • Post in thread: Bellyache or Brag, what's your weather?

68°f today and 89°f by Thursday. Beer, tacos and a fishing pole.
  • Post in thread: Bonding and Grounding Solar Components

Nevada , AZ. In 2017 the Nec was amended to attempt to take some of the speculation about what is considered a structure. A light pole has been given an exemption if the pole is a manufactured part of the lighting system . Billboards , electric signs, airfield towers etc... anything with an...
  • Post in thread: Growatt SPF3000TL dry contact

I just received an email from signature solar stating they do not provide any support for the generator start feature on growatt inverters despite the fact that the feature is listed in the literature. Is this an off grid inverter? Is it a 2 wire start system ? If so , are your control wires...
  • Post in thread: Remotely Monitoring BASIC 12v Solar System, Why is there not an easy solution for this???

Sounds like what I need. Are there different models?
  • Post in thread: Permits, sorry to ask

Most places allow " owner - builder" permits. You simply must act as a contractor. Draw a set of plans and submit them to the local AHJ. The city or county engineer will approve or deny the plans. Pay the fees , get inspections and you can turn those docs into your homeowners insurance to...
  • Post in thread: Quality turbine controller for lifepo4?

I thought pwm was bad for lifepo4?
  • Post in thread: Carbon foam batteries?

I won't be buying any. Check Firefly's warranty...if it gets over 80 f they start cutting the warranty. The lifepower4 batts IMHO , are better
  • Post in thread: Roof Top Grounding Sanity Check Please

Lightning protection and equipment grounding are two different things. An airport rotating beacon on a 60ft metal tower has 2 "grounds". The ground from the rotating light fixture on the tower ties into the electrical systems egc as usual. The lightning rod on the tower is bonded to the tower...
  • Post in thread: Carbon foam batteries?

There is a guy in town who swears by these carbon foam batteries. I have a few questions... Are they any better than lead acid? Why do the marine guys like these batteries so much? How well do they perform in the heat? We have 96-100 °f highs and around 86° f lows daily in August. Can...
  • Post in thread: Hello from Mexico

Hello, My home is off grid and yes 120/240 single phase. The home has propane for heating ,cooking and hot water. My largest load will be a 240v 30k btu ac unit ,manufacturers data sheet says it consumes 3380w, around 11000w at start up. I estimate a daily usage of 48,000wh for 6 mos of...

  • Post in thread: What is recommended way to ground a ground mount solar array?

No one is getting shocked by an electrical system because they walked into an area between 2 rods that were properly grounded. Electricity takes the easiest path to ground. If you're not it, you're not getting shocked. You are more likely to get shocked by a poorly grounded system . A bad...
  • Post in thread: Wire ? Stranded or solid ?

Either solid or stranded will do as long as it's copper. Stranded will be a lot easier to pull. If you have more than 3 current carrying conductors in a piece of conduit you have to derate the ampacity of the wire. If the conduit is on the roof there are ambient temperature correction factors...
  • Post in thread: Average Consumption?

I'm at EDR. How long have you been here?
  • Post in thread: Simple question for professional electricians on splicing.

No wire splices are allowed in the conduit. The splice must be accessible . It must be located in a box. I would use a insulated multi tap connector instead of a butt splice
  • Post in thread: Solar gear prices in Mexico

So you have shipping in the U.S to your desired location. Vendor charges you this. Most companies are reluctant to ship to Mexico. They will ship it to a U.S. location and then you can hire an international shipper to transport it to Mexico.... you pay again ....in addition to that you then...
  • Post in thread: Is this much mount footing really necessary?

That's too much for me to mix. Those days are gone. I would turn to dust and blow away. On 12" diameter holes I like to make 2x4 wood wedges(1-1/2 - 6" thick ) and use them to pin the pole in the center of the hole. I use 3 per hole and it leaves adequate room to get the mud around. Great time...
  • Post in thread: Hello from Mexico

    48,000 watts daily
  • Post in thread: Bonding and Grounding Solar Components

I agree it's the interpretation of " structure ". The nec definition of " structure " is " that which is built other than equipment " . Every inspector I've ever had considers the electrical sign on the pole the equipment and the pole and base the structure.
  • Post in thread: OffGrid - Growatt Project

Check those battery switches, most of them are rated at 48vdc , lithium batteries operate beyond that voltage rating. Blue Sea has stated their switches are not to be used beyond rated voltage.

  • Post in thread: Equipment suppliers in Baja?

Hello, Does anyone know of any reliable solar equipment suppliers in Baja Mexico? Bringing gear from the U.S adds 19% tax to the equation. I found some companies on the net but they only wanted to sell packages that they install. Thanks
  • Post in thread: Cable Size Vernacular

Technically it has to do with die sizes required in manufacturing, but i think that was an easy to understand example.
  • Post in thread: Used sol ark 9k value?

So I went on a job today to help a local guy install 2- Outback Radian Gs8048A inverters. After we finished up and commissioned the system , I noticed a sol ark 9k 240vac inverter on the wall , nothing attached, not in use. It's too small, so they went with the 2 new 8k units. Local guy thinks...
  • Post in thread: EX 6500 wifi a no go

Are you using watchpower app? After you connect to the wifi module it should prompt you to confirm the connection, then ask for your wifi router and password. Then it should reboot and connect.
