A new day.
Ran Genset and punched batteries up to 27.2 and float kicks in but as it's a sunny day, we still have 90 amps coming in from solar while Genset remains running
This has been going for over 30 minutes now
It seems at this stage the Midnite Classic 150 was set with a higher cutoff than...
I was still a bit unsure so I got onto the JBD rep on Alibaba and had a speedy response with pictures which makes it easy and...... not what I was thinking
Zoom in
Might be cheaper and easier in the long run to forget about expensive energy efficient fridges and spend the extra dollars on more battery, better inverter and solar.
We run multiple large 240v fridge freezer on our boat, out full time, very rarely does the genset get used as she has a good...
Yep, just went down below and visually checked. Shot everything with laser thermometer and tested voltage on all cells.
All same and all seemed good.
Unplugged BMS harness, blue lights off and reconnected.
Blue lights on
Pic of reading now on app for batt A
Note SOC
Temp at batt with laser...
Victron battery monitor is showing overall battery SOC is 77.4% and down -200ah from 840ah
Guessing the app/BMS needs a bit of time to recalibrate itself
Been so long since I needed to do anything I've forgotten the quirks found in the early days.
It's an interesting thing, I was well into building a restrained 55 ft powercat and got to the lockup shell stage with 3 litre diesel engines, shafts and rudders in then it put me in hospital.
After that scare I put her on hold and we stepped sidways into what we have now and have been out here...
New here but not totally unfamiliar with the concept of solar any batteries but far from knowledgeable.
Have been cruising full time on the Queensland coast in a converted prawn trawler for 5 years now with a predominantly 240v boat powered by 2.5kw of solar, a midnite classic 150mppt, a...
Damn interwebs and it's rabbit holes
Woke up this morning, read comments, searched some more, got even more confused
Went down and backed off nuts, did up until finger tight and gave them a couple of turns more.
Not enough for my torque wrench to register.
I am in Aus as well and went this BMS
https://diysolarforum.com/threads/jbd-bms-have-found-similar-here-but-not-this-model.25881/#post-306023
Using matched and batched cells from Amy
8 cells into 24v X 3
Each with its own 200amp BMS
3 for redundancy and less stress on the batts.
Boat can run on...
That calculator I used wanted a us postcode to work out sun.
I put in Florida as that's pretty much the same latitude as where we are in Oz and the 4.5 hours was a winter calc. So 1 hour of Genset in the am is about right and what happens near every day in winter.
In summer the sun and amps...
Well, it did get fully charged while doing the initial top balance while on a bench.
But yes, I see what you are saying.
I need to be brave and get out the Victron USB dongle
I never did the initial settings as then, I didn't have one but the electrician who did the install and big wire...
Well, been running a few weeks now and appart from those initial teething problems it's been running great.
Trouble maker batts I pulled BMS wires out and reconnected and away she went
No changes made.
Boats on the hard in a shed getting mainenance so solar hasn't come into play yet but we...
Hi,
Cells will be here soon for 3 X 8s with 3 BMS and am wondering .......will I need to have 3 apps loaded -1 for each BMS or does the same app control all 3?
Never used one before, just wanting to get my ducks in a row in advance.
Our Victron multiplus has a port in it to run out wire to starts for a 4 amp trickle charge
We have no alternator on the engine, too expensive and problematic to use as a charging source for house bank imho.
And, has been proven not to be needed to maintain starts.
I think* I have decided on these GBS cells for our new 600ah house bank build but I am unsure as to why they have twice as many terminals as others.
Anything to be concerned about or is it simply a 1 is good , 2 is better thing?
* I keep flopping between a 600ah bank of these and an 840ah bank...
Have 3 seperate eve 280 24v batts installed.
All matched and batched
All top balanced
All cell terminals cleaned, noaloxed and torqued
All cables the same size.
2 batteries seem identical or near enough
But one (A) draws less when under load and has more go in when under charge and the imbalance...
Hi
We are full time cruisers on a boat that is set up to be away from shore power indefinitely.
When we got her the batteries and inverter were dead and on the perhaps false assumption that it was sized correctly, simply replaced with a bit more.
8 batteries replaced 6 and 5000w inverter...
Useless thing didn't even get connected
Could not select a voltage lower than 6v
Still have "some" time - noalox has not arrived yet, can't be bought in Australia
Living on a boat, actually cruising so if it ain't coming by post to our next port I can't get it.
Are load resistors something I...
Interesting read but a bit above my pay grade doing the proper calculations even if using the links above.
Anyone got any further input as to what the "actual" torque wrench setting would be to get to the 12ft/lb in the eve280 specs?
I have started at 5 ft lbs (lowest click on torque wrench)...
So what did you end up using?
Like you I am in Australia where ox-gard and noalox are neither cheap or easy to get.
If, as some say the mission is to keep air and moisture out of the connection I wonder why lanolin couldn't be used
I have several litres of lanox mx4 onboard, have used it for...
Thanks for the reply Steve,
All bought at same time from Amy
All matched and batched
All top balanced
All fully charged and let sit for a week to sort themselves out before install
"Steve said... Are these connected to a common DC BUS such as a 4 point BusBar ?
I found that even just doubling...
Totally agree but it's what's onboard.
It only ever gets charged when batts at at 97% and the 2500 watts of solar are smashing amps in - or now, with a failing AGM bank, it gets done with the 7.5 kVA Genset as I give the batteries a head start charge in the morning.
We have a Victron 5000/120...
The 180 litre 240v HWS on our boat cuts on @ 52c and off at around 60c
But I do a manual turn on when amps are smashing in and turn breaker off when done or else it comes on again around 3am and destroys the 24v batteries pulling around 70amps.
Ours has an 1800w element
It was working fine just doing the starts
Using a vsr to charge house banks killed it off
And I wont be spending another $500 on an alternator + $1000 getting a mc624 balmar or similar fitted.
Fair enough, just looks a bit odd and I have been asked why the bars aren't full and green vs 50% and an unhealthy puss colour ?
As long as it's doing its thing and "normal" I am good.
Thanks
My thoughts exactly
Was thinking clear PVC tube same size as bolt for insulation cut very slightly longer than ply thickness.
On either side as an insulater to the large washers used, an offcut of the plastic cutting board mats used as cell dividers. (My ply will be epoxy resin coated anyway)...
I'd be looking at what companies like silent yachts are doing
https://powerboat.world/news/232952/Ten-solar-electric-catamarans-under-construction
Several other companies doing it now as well...
As mentioned in another post our 880ah @ 24v of AGM is failing after 5 years of full time use.
840ah @ 24v worth of EVE have been paid for and hopefully will soon be on their way.
In the meantime, trying to keep what we have operational.
Method for the last few weeks is to wake up at 5am, batts...
But it only works when the engine is running so there are days and days or longer at anchor with no input from that expensive box.
With an already installed 2.5kw of solar I get silent trouble free daily power in without running the engine and an already installed 7.5kva genset provides more...
