Be aware....Just tried to order $2000 worth of batteries from <vendor> and they rejected my C Card. That produced a Fraud alert and cancelled card.

Vendor rejected the card but then processed the payment apparently and the bank asked if I had made this transaction and I said it was rejected.

Chase flagged the purchase and refused to process it.

That's not how this worked. Immediately, within seconds, the card was rejected on the eco website.

Yes it is. Steps 1-4 often happen almost instantaneously.

I cancelled the order and 10 minutes later I get an email from Chase, asking if I completed this purchase.

I have received MULTIPLE fraud calls from Chase. NEVER have they ever asked if I COMPLETED this purchase. They asked me "This is so-and-so with the Chase fraud divisions calling about potential suspicious purchase activity. Did you make a purchase from vendor for $X?"

I say, "yes." They say, "please resubmit the purchase, and it will go through."

Since it was obviously submitted to Chase I'm thinking that the eco site was hacked or phished.

Nope. It was just you not understanding how this works.

Lessons learned:
  1. Only you or your bank can cancel your credit card.
  2. If you attempt to make a purchase from a legitimate seller, it is rejected, and your bank calls you asking if you made the purchase, you say, "yes."

Not only do merchants rarely deal directly with your card issuer, but they also don't deal directly with the networks. Instead, most merchants -- especially small businesses -- work with a credit card processing company. Essentially, credit card processors are the go-between for the merchant and the network

It was rejected on the eco website and about 10 minutes later from the cc company asking if I had made the purchase which I didn't because eco rejected it!
So you told them you didn't make the purchase, thus telling them it was stolen... and so they cancelled it

user error, as usual 🤣

Every now and than it seems that the CC system has a screw up and either refuses a Merchants charge or asks if the charge is legit. Some merchants will blacklist cards that get rejected by the CC co. and refuse to resubmit where as others you just have to start over again. It is all about trying to prevent fraud.

Trying to get approval to use a CC on Aliexpress requires you to submit your Drivers license (front and back image) and Credit card image (front and back) before they will let you use it for larger purchases.
I can use 3 different cards on aliexpress, visa, mastercard and american express
no ID required.

With larger purchases it is very common to have the payment rejected, then the purchaser will say yes, I made a purchase when the bank calls or texts about the transaction, the bank then white lists the vendor for a second attempt and on the second attempt it will clear.

There a lot more happening here than is apparent…..usually this only happens when the bank is protecting itself and the card holder or both…OR the bank is aware of some skullduggery from someone doing somthing…
naw, this happens all the time with smaller companies online. probably 25%-40% of transactions get this the first time a user uses a website that they never used before.
If a user uses random small websites frequently, it's much less likely to happen to them though.
Cards will just ask if you made the purchase, if you say yes, you can continue.

Big vendors like paypal, square, stripe, ebay, amazon, walmart, bestbuy, blah blah blah won't get it flagged when it's the "first" time you've used your card there.
However small vendors like this eco.. or jenny's seed shop, etc will.

yea, square, stripe, paypal, hartford, etc
It isn't even possible to directly interface with the cards as a developer. You're required to go through these 3rd parties.
There's a new bank for direct interaction called "column" but other than them, you have to be a giant in order to be allowed to interact directly.

Yep. My last purchase from Amy Wan... I sent Chase a secure message through the website confirming the purchase...just in case.

So long as you never get flagged. Surprised me when it happened last year. Now I can only use the 1 CC that I jumped through the hoops to prove was valid.

Credit card processing has changed a whole lot. How many remember when you handed the sales clerk your credit card and the clerk reached under the table and pulled out the book? Dropping it on the counter with a big boom!

For those too young to remember, the book contained ALL of the credit card numbers, both valid and invalid. The clerk would have to manually search through and locate your number to verify if it was good or not. Your card would be good until the book was updated.

The book was as large as an old telephone book from a large city. How many remember telephone books... oh never mind.

flagged like you stole something from aliexpress so they want to make sure you're legit?
I guess I've used them so many years, they know I'm me

Nothing nefarious on my part. I have also used them for several years before it happened. When they did it I just about quit using them because it torqued me off.

Heh...
I had a fraud situation recently, scammers were horassing my customer to get payment direct deposited to a chase account.
They had my invoice and everything...
No fraud alert followup at all.
