Hi, I own a daly 48v 250amp bms (regretting it) does it actually balance? Trying to charge my bank up to 3.5v per cell, one cell is peaking and shutting the bms charge down, but the balance never seems to kick in.

You have to turn on balance and Daly BMS will only balance when charging. I don't even think they balance at 1amp, so useless. Buy a 5amp active balancer you'll be much happier.

Did you top-balance? The BMS will do a tiny balance for maintenance purposes. An initial top-balance is a requirement, IMHO.

I did an initial top balance, all was well, I have an active balancer on the way, hopefully that will sort it.

if your cells are honest to god grade a cells the DALY BMS will keep them in balance if you properly top balanced them to begin with. if they are not (and I honestly doubt anybody on this forum actually has brand new grade A cells)(including myself) then the DALY's low voltage balance regeime will not be able to keep up. one of the heltec 5 amp blancers will keep cells in balance even if they are really shitty ones.

good luck.

Thanks, I have an heltec balancer on the way, I did a long top balance initially, but then the cells sat dormant for a while due to circumstances before I could finish building my system.

Do you remove the Daly bms and use only the heltec balancer? Does the balancer have other protection switches?

You still need the BMS to do its job. Just connect the balancer on it too. There are no settings in the balance board.

You will like the results of the active balancer. After adding it my cells usually stay at 0.000 - 0.002 at rest and 0.020 to 0.050 while charging at 40amps. I would get the 5amp. Over the 1 or 2 amp balancer. Unless you really slow charge your batteries.

All four of my Daly's are junk. JK BMS are my favorites. Seplos are good if you are a computer guru and enjoy setting 100+ parameters.

Can I use the balancer and bms while using an external charger. I have purchased a charger to aid in keeping my battery charged. Sick of not having charged battery at night. Seems my Growatt either exhaust my battery before night or on different setting slowly drains while not charging it. Growatt is disappointment. I am wiser now. I will make better choice in future. Suppose you live and learn. Best education. :)

I have been using Daly BMSs (have build about 100 large capacity batteries) and have never seen an issue with them keeping up with balancing.
I know it only balances at 35 mA one cell at a time only when near the completion of charging.
My home is off grid with a Daly14S 500A
It is not smart so there are no settings to play with (to allow customers to damage batteries)
I top balance prior to connecting the BMS
My batteries are from several Nissan Leaf cars (14S 48P, ~ 42kWh)
The battery cell capacities are between 17 and 20 Ah (not equal)
I charge at over 140 amps/~8kW
I run a 12kW inverter
When the cells deep discharge (to 10 percent charge) the balance may vary by 0.09V (so)
They go right back into balance when charged (the BMS never warms up or so there is no indication of balancing)
I cannot see adding active balancers as I see them as complex added points of potential failure

I have ordered 100 PF280K (storage grade) batteries (they claim grade A like everyone) and want to know if I should not expect the Daly BMSs to work for my next builds. Please reply only if you have practical experience with this since so many people have strong opinions regarding active balancing since my experience is that high balance current is only needed in place of initial top balancing.

Shhh.. don't tell anyone this. If your bms kicked off with a runner, stop and reduce your charge current. Maybe put a tiny little load on it for a few minutes to get it back down from the top of the charge knee. No need for a massive discharge.

Recharge with a little Noco 2A or say 5A charger on that big bank. (set to lithium/LFP mode of course) Chill out for awhile.
