If you want to get fancy consider the Vicor NBM modules. They are basically 4:1 DC/DC transformers, so the inverter can treat the 48V battery like a 12V battery - charge it, discharge it, set voltage limits, whatever. But they are pricey and require some additional work from you (a PWB to make it work.)I want to have a 48V battery bank that can power a 12V inverter. Can I use a 48V DC to 12V DC converter for this?
