I am upgrading my system this summer from 2x 6 volts configured for 12 volts to 4x 6v staying in 12v. I had the 2 batteries connected together using a 1 foot cable between the first battery - to the second +. Now that I will have 4 batteries what is the best orientation for series-parallel and do the cables connecting the batteries need to be all the same length. I would like to have them all beside each other because of the location their reside.

Searching online, I found this setup that I like, I would make sure that the main positive and negative going out would be from different series, I heard that’s the way to do it.

The two series connections should be the same length as each other.
The two parallel connections should be the same length as each other.
The negative system wire should connect to the bottom-left battery in your diagram, not the bottom-right. This will give you better balance between the two parallel strings.
