Seems promising but need to learn more about their capabilities.

Yep. I'm reading up on it more and more to decide what to use.

Heltec LoRa32 V3, easy to setup and use. Antenna is poor but you can buy good ones for $30.

Is there hop count issues?

Ended up using a large WiFi network myself but I was only dealing with a few km².
