Ok, so I found this. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804906372669.html Really cheap LiFePO4 batteries. 70 bucks for 400Ah. Thing is, I don't want to burn to death. So, just how bad can someone make a battery? Is there a limit to how bad a battery can be? Are they lying? How do I get a good cheap chinese LiFePO4, you know without dying for it?

Do LiFePO4 batteries need charge balancing when their in series? I plan on making my own BMS so I don't really care about safety circuitry, because I'm going to add it myself. However if the cells themselves can be made badly then that's a different story.

1) Where to do I get good cheap Chinese Lifepo4 batteries?

2) Do 4s LiFePo4 Batteries need charge balacing?

3) Just how badly can someone screw up making a cell?

Here's my price table for Aliexpress.
$37.81 / 200Ah = 0.189 $/Ah Aliexpress 3256804906372669
$66.22 / 240Ah = 0.276 $/Ah Aliexpress 3256804906384519
$28.50 / 120Ah = 0.236 $/Ah Aliexpress 3256804906347613
$80.62 / 100Ah = 0.806 $/Ah Aliepxress 3256804906354611
$60.77 / 240Ah = 0.253 $/Ah Aliexpress 3256804906305903
$75.62 / 310Ah = 0.244 $/Ah Aliexpress 3256804906350661

I'm gonna put my up to date research here.

This thread: These sellers are mostly scammers they sell air, not death traps.
Also it seems store age is one indicator of legitimacy.
However I still have not found a Chinese manufacturer.

OK.

So, they are selling a "4S x 200Ah" pack for 38 USD with free shipping?

Meanwhile our friends at Luyuan (well known for supplying good stuff) are selling their 202Ah (not matched / certified) cells for 82 USD EACH.

Something really doesn't add up here, and I suspect that it's the "200Ah". What's the betting that you will get 4 x 50Ah cells? (4x50 = 200 doesn't it?)

I'd be tempted to buy one and see what actually turns up, if anything does.

The Golden Rule is always - If it (here in Thailand that would be "she") looks too good to be true then ...

Do not waste your time and money on these scammers on Aliexpress, when it is too good to be true it is too good to be true.

That store is just opened on Dec 25th 2022:

Clicked the link and it says Not Found.

It's probably better for you to buy a battery instead of trying to build one, until you learn how to source parts based on something besides price.

I've been dealing with Chinese manufacturers for the last 16 years. In my industry manufacturers will send us "performance videos"of the products we buy. If I had a dollar for every "performance video" that did not match the product we received I'd be very rich. Our industry pools enough money to have a guy on the ground in China to represent our collective interests.

My experience is to avoid New vendors or vendors with cheap prices and especially new vendors with cheap prices, until they are completely vetted.

Hmm.
Okay, I stand corrected
I wonder why you can't get them now though except through some two bit distributor on AliExpress

I ordered 30Kw of these just to see what would happen. It's a scam... AliXpress has a very small window that you can use to claim a product never arrived or was deffective. The sellers are counting on people not paying attention and you loose all your money...

I don't have any answers for these questions but I have some comments.

Recently I installed a bank of NiCad Batteries made in India.
They failed commissioning tests.
The next set I put in were SAFT a brand I heard of and no problems.

In use when you have strings of normal batteries you need to do balancing as you call it....
Its just second nature to me to do a balance every few months and a recondition charge once a year on heavily used sets.
Lithium is so new that you should talk to the manufacturer before you use any of your previous routines with them.
I dunno but I'm too scared to experiment with my own personal safety.

Well I work for a company that relies on global procurement of the cheapest crap we can get with the longest delivery times possible.
But even my employer is not stupid enough to test that theory on Lithium cells made in China.
But they are stupid enough to buy NiCads made in India because they are unlikely to catch fire.
Your mileage may vary....
