Gas generators to be banned in USA

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has proposed a policy (pdf) that would remove nearly all existing portable gas generators from the market. The new rule restricts the amount of carbon monoxide that generators can emit by forcing these generators to switch off when they reach a certain level of emissions.

Smaller gas generators would have to cut carbon monoxide emissions by 50 percent, and larger generators would have to cut emissions by up to 95 percent. Nearly all models currently available are expected to not be in compliance with the new standard.

Once the proposed rules come into effect, manufacturers would have to comply with them in just six months, a process that usually takes several years. The rules would also ban manufacturers from stockpiling noncompliant generators before the new standards are enacted.

When did the US become a communist country, where the government dictates which products you can or cannot purchase?
Light bulbs, gas ovens, cars, lawnmowers, generators.... the "free market" is now an illusion. Only capitalism can bring down prices based on competition. Central planning taxing, and control is what we fought England over.
Just like Will Smith riding a motorcycle in I Robot, only a gas engine can set you free from control.

What about all you propane generator people?

"Propane is considered a “clean-burning” fuel, as it produces less pollutants than diesel and gasoline. Specifically, it produces only half as much carbon monoxide (CO) as gasoline. If fumes or pollution is a concern, propane is a good energy source to choose."

California is leading the way, just like seat belts and emission controls in cars. All small ICE power equipment is in the books to be phased out and banned for sale. Lawnmowers, generators, leaf blowers, chain saws, everything.

Based on information provided by manufacturers and in market research, staff estimates a 30 percent compliance rate with PGMA G300's sensor and shutoff requirements as of 2022. One sixth of those PGMA-compliant units (or 5 percent of the total) are estimated to also be compliant with the emissions requirements of UL 2201.
Safety is very difficult to achieve without standards since there usually is not a lot of incentive when customers usually regard price above all else.

Should also be noted there were estimated 23,000+ injuries in USA from CO poisoning from portable generators during 2004-2021 and over 1300 deaths.

It was estimated the cost increase to make compliant generators to be 3%.

I laugh when I see advertisements for ECO electric leaf blowers that tout 560 CFM, "more power than gas"
My 80cc Husky 580 has a 4" duct and blows over 900 CFM. Nope, no longer for sale in CA.

It's just a proposal ... Nothing has been decided.

It's a pattern. They're looking to remove anything and everything powered by gas.
Cheap energy and products that use it are a requirement to keep a certain standard of living in modern fist world countries.
These people are extreme in their views and have no problem imposing hardships and a reduced standard of living on the middle class.

The ability of these agencies to impose their will on us needs to be rolled back or abolished completely. It's out of control and completely at odds with how things should function in America.

And that is called natural selection, if you can't figure out how to use a generator without gassing yourself, maybe it's for the best for humanity as a whole that you DON'T pass on your genetics lol !

Anyway that's 1,300 over 15yrs , less than 100 a year . Aren't ladders more dangerous than that ? They should ban ladders too ! (oh wait already did that in the UK ?)

Believe it or not this is true. I have no problems with safety tests and certain safety standards. But you can't legislate away every accident or act of stupidity.

With Freedom comes responsibility. Shit happens and will always happen.

Yea things shouldn't be allowed to be deliberately dangerous in the name of 'freedom' , I guess the line has to be drawn somewhere
