When my fla-battery bank died recently the charge controller (Morningstar ProStar PS-30M Gen2)
was charging the bank at bulk rate while the bank was literally boiling. I wonder now whether I can still trust that
controller and if there is a way to test whether it is broken or not. Why didn't it switch to absorption?

If (somehow) some of the charging parameters were all wrong, it would behave badly. You would need to know for sure what the parameter values should be and be able to check the current settings. If the parameters are known to be correct and it is acting up, it is likely flawed.

I use those at various times. Easy to setup, but don't run anything across the face and hurt the ambient temp-sensor.

At this distance, my first thought is poor / loose connections to the controller itself.

However, on page 6 and 7 of the manual, you will find how to run the self-diagnostic test, and a chart of the error codes.
