Interesting BMS behavior: is this normal?

If your batteries regularly see > 3.45V/cell, then hopefully, that should be sufficient for balancing.

Equalization in the traditional sense is exclusively for flooded lead acid batteries.

With the 48V equalizers linked above (or a similar product), that may be sufficient to never have additional concern or need effort for maintaining balance.

They do hit that voltage for a bit, but I don't know if that's long enough, as I followed your advice to set the float to 54V, which they seem to be rather happy with, but, there's definitely no balancing happening at that voltage.

If you see potential balance issues, a float of 54.4 will likely induce some balancing.

If I notice that the batteries are not taking the same amount of Ah, I'll experiment with a higher float.
