max PV input voltage for MultiPlus-II Inverter/Charger 48/3000??

I've looked over the manual and all documents I can find to no avail, what am I missing?

The panels i am working with are all in the 40v range so im trying to work out if two panels in series is enough? or should I push for 3? Is there a theory as to the most eficent pv voltage for chaging a 48v system?

According to that document the DC input range is 38 to 66 volts. It also show a separate charge controller. Usually the voltage specs of panels are very specific and not stated in terms of range. The charge controller you purchase will determine what panel configuration will be optimum. The battery charger voltage settings may not be adjustable and that would be my biggest concern. However a good. charg controller could compensate for that.

That unit is an inverter/charger which does not contain a solar charge controller so pv input is not applicable.
