Maximum amp hours for a charger?

The Victron IP22 30amp Smart charger says it supports batteries 100-300ah. My battery is 400ah.

Can somebody explain why a charger has maximum ah? Would it work with my 400, and just take longer to charge?

I'd say, it depends on your battery chemistry. If lead acid, you need a certain amount of amperage/current to properly keep the electrolyte from stratifying.

Its not a max ah limit as much as a recommendation for size of the charger. Basically if it isn't large enough you won't get the battery charged back up in a single day.

You probably want a charger with a higher output for a bank of that size. 75-100 amp output is near the maximum of what you can plug into a typical 15 amp AC outlet without tripping the breaker.

Probably work fine. Although the charge may time out and drop to float before 100% charged. Probably the battery will not be flat dead when charging starts so it may only be working with 300 ah or less most of the time anyway.

If there is any plan to go 1000 ah battery it could present an issue.
