Is it possible/safe to connect 2 - 12v alternators in series to get 24v to charge my 24v leisure battery? If so, would the original alternator still charge the 12v van battery? I'd assume some sort of diode circuit would be needed for that.

This is not practical with stock alternators since the alternator case is the negative connection. Its possible to get specialist alternators with a negative isolated from the casing but even then with two in series there would be issues with feeding the field winding and regulator with the correct voltage.

If you are thinking of adding a second alternator fit a 24 volt alternator with suitable charge control for the 24v battery. The original alternator would only power the vehicle circuits and 12v starter battery.

The simple and most used method is to fit a dc 12v to dc 24v charger between the existing 12v battery and the 24v leisure battery. These battery to battery chargers are available from a number of companies like Victron and Sterling.

Unless your installation has high power demands, a 12v leisure battery system is a less complex ( and costly) alternative.

Very much appreciate your input here. Was looking for an easy solution because I wasn't aware of all the options out there. This seems to fit the bill as far as ease and affordability. Thanks!
