I'm planning on putting solar on my roof but I have to wait on a few other things first. I'd really like to get a couple panels that I can pair with a 5kw 48v battery (such as the Eg4 rack) in case of a hurricane or other extended power outages. I have a 12v inverter but I don't want to invest into 12v when the ultimate goal is a 48v system.

I only need to utilize 500-800 watts or so and the entry level stuff will be useless when I install the full system. Is there something cheap enough that is disposable but won't damage an expensive Eg4 battery?

There is the EG4 3k. And the below that would be Victron makes some smaller stuff like the Phoenix 48v 1200VA. But you start adding up the little Victron stuff and it probably costs as much as the 3k for inverter and charge controller.

I would suggest a 48/1200 for around $330. It has around 10W idle consumption, so even when you move to a larger 48V system you can continue to use it to power your 24*7 gear like network etc.

Or sell it used, Victron resale is pretty solid.
