While researching how I am going to install my new split phase inverter, and having a mild heart attack at the price of wire, I happened upon this Amazon special price for a 50ft 30a generator cable for $42.49 limited time. This is less than any price I have seen for 4 wire SOOW cord. Indeed many 10 or 25ft bare 10/4 SOOW come in at about the price of this 50 footer. I don't need 50ft but at this price I can easily cut it down and use it.

very nice - and the 25ft version costs $7 more. They must be having a space crunch in the warehouse. I hear amazon is crazy about sales volume verse shelf space and if you stock something in their warehouse that isn't selling they give you a date to pay to have it shipped back or they toss it in a bin sale box to be picked over.

my A-hole uncle told me an my sisters to take our shoes off and grab the electric fence wire, he had just watered the grass. But just touch it, not a good grip. We were 10.

I bought the 50 footer so I can move my portable generator(s) further from the house, which everyone will appreciate during long outages.
The 25' one I had was on the edge of being too close.

For those wondering, "Won't that extra 25' of cord take away some of the generator power due to voltage drop?"

10 AWG is 0.001 ohm per foot
50 additional feet of wire (counting two hot conductors)
Power = I^2R = (25)(25)(0.001)(50) = 31.25 Watts lost
I'll gladly give that up for the convenience of a quieter house.

What gauge is it actually? "100% copper", hope that isn't "100% copper (CCA)"
Anybody going to sacrifice one? Or at least take a 4-wire resistance measurement?

As promised I am reporting on what I found after cutting and stripping the cable. It appears to be pure copper and also seems to be proper gauge size. I created a shorter 20ft cord for my needs. Cant say I was impressed with the aftermarket plug I got to do this. I ended up placing silicone on it to help prevent water intrusion.
