I keep seeing news that next month (July 2024) tariffs on Chinese batteries will increase a lot.

EV batteries July 24.
Other batteries e.g. for solar storage January 2026.

LFP batteries dropped in price during the past 18 months (basically after I bought my first 15kWh, no surprise).

Could we be at a price bottom? Storage systems have another 18 months before tariffs increase on them.

I never understood the idea of tariffs on products that do not have a domestic supply. Increasing the tariffs raises the prices we have to pay for these batteries so that maybe,... an American company might build them instead.

I think right now it's tough to know which way the wind is blowing, solid-state batteries are commercially shipping already in small applications, and many of the manufacturers are US-based so who knows, maybe we'll be onto another battery chemistry before the tariffs increase on lifepo4 and it doesn't matter anyways. 🤷‍♂️

On May 14, 2024, the Biden administration announced new tariffs after a two-year review of Section 301, hiking levies on a backset of Chinese imports, including solar cells and modules, lithium-ion EV batteries, lithium-ion non-EV batteries, battery parts and components, etc.

Tariff rates will double from 25% to 50% for solar cells and modules after 2024 and rise from 7.5% to 25% for lithium-ion non-EV batteries (most energy-storage batteries) in 2026. The tariff rate on natural graphite will increase from zero to 25% in 2026.

Changes and effective years are as follows:

I am not allowed to buy more batteries until all solar modules are installed. A few "temporary" things need to be cleaned up as well before wife gives green light. I think I will add 20kWh in September 2024.

"It's a tax!"
