Hey I am Rajas from India, me and my team is trying to make a hybrid model of Solar and Wind turbine. I saw your transfer switch video recently and I want to ask that instead of public power can we substitute it with wind turbine? Wind turbine will be connected with a battery and inverter so that it converts to AC, but is it possible?
Are main issue with this project is the switch when respective batteries get utilised and I think automatic transfer switch will help us with that. Please help it's really urgent.
Thank you.

Hi Rajas!

Welcome to the forum! If you're a beginner at all this I recommend Will's Beginner Video Playlist and the Frequently Asked Questions.

Questions are best asked in other than "Newcomers" area as not everyone watches these threads - but are generally quite active in other discussion forums.

To answer you question, yes. An automatic transfer switch generally has two inputs for AC and a single output for AC. It's job is to safely switch to the input that has power, or if both have power to the preferred input (usually shore power). Circuit wise it is the same as an SPDT:

But, in your case, have you looked at wind and solar feeding into the same battery bank? Batteries are generally the expensive part; so by combining them you might be able to reduce costs.

Ya actually we researched for a single battery but we couldn't get any solid proof about it whether discharging and charging would work simultaneously, I guess that's not possible so we decided to use two different batteries for wind turbine and Solar.

Would a single solar charger with both wind and solar PV inputs work for you?

Actually we want to switch between wind and solar ,like if the battery of solar system is exhausted then it should switch to the battery of wind turbine. Is this possible with automatic transfer switch or this device which you have mentioned?

Batteries can't be charging and discharging at the same time. But it'll still do what you want.

For example, let's use your two power power sources feeding into @Rider's controller, feeding into a battery, that feeds an inverter.

Now let's assume the inverter is drawing 200W. If the solar is providing 100W then inverter will take that 100W and another 100W from the battery; the battery is discharging. But, if the wind is also providing 150W, then that's 250W in, and the battery will be charging with the 50W. Hope that helps!

Update:
The way to think about power is like a garden hose. Voltage is water pressure, hose diameter is resistance, the amount that comes out is governed by V=IR. So, if you hook up one water source at 14V (the SCC) to a 12V source (the battery), electrons flow into into the battery (it's charging). If you add an outlet at the battery, now the power can drain from the SCC and battery into the outlet. Or, if the outlet's flow is restricted, the SCC might send some current into the battery while completely filling the outlet pipe.

Welcome Rajas. For generating AC, you can make a transformer to convert DC to 220vac, there are many videos on Youtube for that. Here's a YT search to help you: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=generator+convert+to+220vac

You also know about the charge controllers that have different ports for solar power and wind power right? They are some type of hybrid charge controller. Here's an Aliexpress search for you: https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesal...lar+hybrid+charge+controller&switch_new_app=y

Why not hook the wind generator and PV panels to the hybrid solar charger controller I mentioned, then hook the charge controller to one battery bank?

Ok, got it. Not sure there are any auto transfer switches for low voltage, most I've seen are 120VAC.

But why switch between batteries? Hook all of the batteries together, charge them all at once. If you have enough battery, you never have to switch them at all. Have both the solar AND the wind charging the battery bank.

Okay I'll figure out with the batteries but will the solar and wind turbine would give enough battery back to charge it? Will the auto transfer switch work for my model? Will a single relay controlled by an Arduino to switch between both renewable resorses work? Like if try to make that circuit

Can you tell exactly how the entire set up and circuit will look? With all the components attached.

It depends on your components, but with a hybrid wind/solar controller something like this....no ATS needed....
