Overkill (JBD) BMS help needed

I have (2) 24v DIY batteries with the Lishen 272 batteries. Both of my BMS's are the Overkill 8s models. I have been running these for 4 or 5 months now with no issues.

A few days ago, I was changing a setting on BMS #1 and when it was updating the new settings, it got hung up and didn't complete the process. I am using android app xiaoxiang 3.1.1026 and had to force stop and clear cache/storage to get the app to work again. Now, the app works fine with my BMS #2, but doesn't work properly with BMS #1, which is the one I was trying to change a setting on.

The BMS #1 itself appears to work correctly, but when I try to use the app on that BMS it is all glitchy - takes forever to load, loads in a haphazard way (one piece of info at a time), and the data doesn't update in real time like normal even after loading. Every time I try to change settings or even get to settings, it fails. I am not sure what I should do - should I re-start this BMS somehow? How do I do that? I would think I would remove balance leads and then take the positive lead off? I don't want to mess something up since it does seem to be working fine, but I want to be able to see that pack on the app and tweak settings - need help here...

I had this same problem recently (also running two Overkill 8S BMS') and a full restart of the BMS solved it. I don't know if this is the best way, but here's what I did;
  1. Disconnect and kill any clients of the Bluetooth module
  2. Disconnect all loads/charging
  3. Disconnect Bluetooth module connector
  4. Disconnect balance leads connector
  5. Wait a minute
  6. Reconnect everything in the reverse of how I disconnected it

Disconnecting the balance-lead connector from the BMS effectively powers it down. In my experience with the JBD / Overkill, doing this resets some stuff (like any faults that have accumulated), but keeps the same parameter settings. So unplug the balance lead connector, let it sit for a few seconds, then plug it back in. At that point the BMS has effectively rebooted, and you can try again with the app.

I haven't seen the problem you are having, but it seems like it may be worth a try.

You can try : Unplug balance lead plug , short out BMS across the two large conductors to get rid of any residual voltage , replace balance plug and reboot.

I have an overkill 8s too, I noticed using the setting mode is not where you want to make adjustments, I make all my adjustments in the parameter view. Making adjustments in settings requires the pack to be disconnected or settings won't take effect but in parameter view it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the help everyone! I will try these solutions and report back.

My batteries are in cold shed and today was a little warmer, so I went in expecting to try some of the methods listed here - first thing I was going to try was to remove balance leads and re-attach and go from there. I connected the app and everything worked as it used to! So the lesson is if the BMS is working, just give it some time and the Overkill BMS will fix itself!
