What would folks prefer when it comes to choosing the cable type for their system?

- single insulated battery cable
- double insulated battery cable
- welding cable

- any other suggestions?

Cheers!

I like a large number of others use Royal Excelene Fine Stranded Welding Cable manufactured in USA by Southwire.
UL Listed Cable: http://industrial.southwire.com/en/tile/10/spec/70300/?country=CA
Non-UL Listed Cable: http://industrial.southwire.com/en/tile/10/spec/70305/?country=CA

For Lugs I Very Highly recommend Selterm Tinned lugs with closed ends as these are a heavier & thicker Pure Copper. Avoid Un-Tinned or anything with an open ended tube type. Link: https://selterm.com/collections/tinned-copper-battery-cable-lugs#collection-products

How I wish we had such options here in the UK too...

But very good point on closed ends, haven't thought of that actually...

Good recs. Made in usa hard to find sometimes. Worth spending the time. Not cheap.

I like temco welding cable for the minute. (made in usa)
I see no reason for tinned cable unless it will be subjected to the environment.

I got my 2/0 from Windy Nation with factory crimped connectors both ends, Made in USA sold on Amazon. They were fine.

I've purchased these in past and are the best lugs I've used. Very high quality beefy ones. My 2/0 die that works well on my older lugs could not properly fit it because it was that much thicker. There is also a slightly less heavy duty version with flared end to make it easier to get all those strands in from those high strand count cables.

The actual multi very fine stranded wire is the same identical stuff, so its only the insulation that is different.

Single insulated battery cable usually available in either red or black will be fine for a permanent fixed installation, or where cable ducting is used.

Double insulated is only necessary if the wiring may be subject to mechanical damage, such as being walked upon or dragged around for portable or mobile equipment.

Welding cable usually only available with high temperature orange insulation, is also double insulated for physical protection, but able to be draped over warm metal. Ideal for battery wiring in engine compartments for example, or exposed to high temperatures such as under metal roofing exposed to direct sun.

Electrically its all the same stuff, same lugs, same tooling.

I got the 1/0AWG size of the "slightly less heavy duty version" of those FTZ lugs. They are really good. Very recommended. I bought a lot of my electrical stuff from Bay Marine Supply. Great place with good service and prompt technical support.

The marine grade wire they sell is Ancor brand. They used to do custom cables too but that stopped early in the pandemic unfortunately.
