    Video Request

Hey Will. Here is a video request for your consideration. Off grid 48v system capable of autostarting a backup generator to recharge when bank is low. I wonder if there are any all in one systems capable of controlling a generator? My winco standby generator has a two wire auto start feature...

Orion Jr. 2 BMS -computer connection

Yes, you can connect using a standard usb to serial cable. You do not need the resistors for this. Just plug and play.

Will's review of the Fortune Brand 100AH Cells

The blue plastic is somewhat transparent so it is possible to see through it. I was able to get manufacturing info from the folks I bought them from (see above).

    Best BMS to use

W why not parallel groups of two cells to make four 200 ah 3.2v cells. Then put those 4 units in series to make 12v 200 ah. One bms to monitor.

How to Parallel Balancing. (YEP 99% of us is doing it wrong)(PART#1)

Good questions. I too expected to be at a higher SOC when the voltage reached the absorb voltage setting. Once charging stopped, the measured voltage dropped to around 54 something. I need to do a close monitoring during charge now to see better what is happening on the high end. I would...

How to Parallel Balancing. (YEP 99% of us is doing it wrong)(PART#1)

I have an Orion Jr 2 BMS. I can connect a laptop and monitor/log cell parameters and program BMS settings such as LVD, HVD, high current disconnect, voltage level to begin balance, temperature shut off, state of charge drift points, etc. It has pros and cons but the data logging is the reason I...

How to Parallel Balancing. (YEP 99% of us is doing it wrong)(PART#1)

I decided to bottom balance since my operating range at the top end is limited by my midnite classics. I can set eq voltage, absorb voltage and float voltage. I set them at 56.8 (EQ is also disabled), 56.8, and 40. When the solar charging pushes the bank voltage to 56.8 I am done but my SOC...

    Orion Jr BMS Review

I thought I would post what I think are some pros and cons of the Orion Jr 2 BMS. I have been running it for about 10 days now. Pros: Very accurate monitoring of cell voltages and DC amps Many many settings and options allow you to customize everything to fit your needs I can connect a laptop...

    48v 400a BMS

The trickle charger was not large enough (only 750ma max) to maintain the gen start battery voltage. The contactor and BMS draw a little more than that. So, I am going to have a separate 12v lead acid battery and trickle charger (1.25 A) to power those devices and put the gen start battery back...

Will's review of the Fortune Brand 100AH Cells

I just replaced my 860aH lead bank with 64 cell of these cells (4p16s). I bought them from Electric Car Parts Company in Utah. They have great customer service and I am very happy with the batteries. (Not a paid endorsement).

    48v 400a BMS

Note that the contactor coil must be energized continuously and I am using my generator start battery (lead acid) to power it. It draws less than .4 amps. I have a trickle charger on that battery to maintain a charge on it. Let me try to enlarge that image..

Orion BMS installed- battery amperage is highly variable

Just installed a 48v 400 aH LIFEPO4 bank and orion jr2 BMS. The DC current is highly variable. Screenshot below. There is some solar charging going on while the inverter is also powering some loads. I sent this image to the tech support of my Magnum inverter just to make sure this was normal. He...

BMS common port vs seperate port

Seems like it should work to me. As mentioned by another there may be a momentary drop in voltage during the switch but I would think the MPPT could handle that. I haven't tested that though.

Quoted US$34,000 for a DIFM 3.6kW system with battery backup

For a few outages per year a good size propane backup genset would be much cheaper and simpler. Mine is hooked to a 1000 gal tank and comes on automatically.

BMS common port vs seperate port

I called Midnite Solar and asked if the Midnite Classic 150 would be damaged if the battery were to be disconnected while the PV array was supplying power. They said it would not be an issue for the Classic because the controller simply shuts off when disconnected from the battery. So, it...

Orion Jr. 2 BMS -computer connection

With some tech support I found out I was not understanding the manual. The standard way of connecting the BMS to the PC is to use a serial cable (USB to serial). You do not directly connect the canbus adapter to the bms serial port as I first thought. There is a way of wiring 3 wires of the BMS...

BMS common port vs seperate port

I am learning here myself but it seems like the C- could be used to disconnect ground from the solar array in order to block the solar from further charging. The charge controller would still be connected to the battery. The voltage and current from the solar array is variable so you would need...

Orion Jr. 2 BMS -computer connection

Anyone here familiar with the Orion Jr 2 BMS? I am setting it up to test how it works on a small 12v pack (4 100ah cells in parallel) I am attempting to use the CANbus adapter to connect it to the computer to program the BMS. I get an error message saying it cannot connect. I checked the wiring...

Will this work for pre-charging inverter capacitors?

Inter Interesting discussion. I think the problem is not that the inverter caps are causing in rush current. The problem is their leads are too small to handle the in rush current when the battery is connected. An larger external capacitor with leads that can handle the high current would...

Will this work for pre-charging inverter capacitors?

Series wasn't the best description so I revised my post. The idea was to have a large capacitor with the + lead on the +inverter lug and the - lead on the - inverter lug. When the contactor closes this would effectively connect the capacitor + to the battery + and the inrush current would charge...

Will this work for pre-charging inverter capacitors?

Can anyone show how they were able to fully automate the precharge process so that it will happen when the BMS sends a signal to an external contactor to reconnect LOAD to BATTERY BANK? Sounds like the solutions discussed so far have been to basically use a parallel circuit with a resistor for...

    4P16S - monitor all 64 cells individually?

Theoretically when you put 4 cells in parallel, the voltages all are the same. However, under charge/discharge each cell wouldn't each cell potentially vary (pun intended)? I am looking at buying an Orion BMS and one model would allow me to monitor all 64 cells. That might be good so I would...

Bus bars Lifepo4- not enough space

You could drill a new hole in the lower bus bar between two of the the existing holes and move the top plate over to it and use a new stainless steel nut/bolt to make that connection.

    LIFEPO4 charging and capacity

My thought was to set the absorb voltage to 3.65 per cell (x16 cells). And figure out by some trial and error how much time of constant voltage absorb is needed to hit 90%. Once that time is determined it would be programmed as the absorb time. That would be the daily charge routine. I would set...

    LIFEPO4 charging and capacity

I think most people are charging their banks to a capacity of 80 to 90 percent in order to extend the number if cycles the bank will last for. In order to measure capacity, a shunt/coulomb meter is typically used to count amps in and out and display state of charge. These systems require a...
