I have some 22mm2 / 4awg wire but my inverter that takes a max size of 6awg. Can you think of any problem if I carefully cut enough wire strands to get the end into a 6awg ferrule so the ferrule will contain the spec amount of conductor? My inverter is an EPEver 40A 1200/1500W in a 24V system. I think 8awg would work but I have the wire, so why not?

Does the #6 ferule fit over the insulation on the #4 wire?
Haven’t tried yet. My guess would be ‘No’. But there’s always heat shrink. And those compression fittings are often used without ferrules, so nothing at all.

If the #4 wire size is for voltage drop over its length, and the #6 is speced for the inverter use (other than voltage drop), it should be just fine.

Actually it is speced for #8 with a max size of #6 that can fit in the connector. My1200/1500 inverter @24V would peak at 63A and #8 can handle 73A.
