I have 14 CS 400 watt solar panels in use with a grid tied inverter but have an EG4 3k off grid inverter as a backup if I lose grid power. There are no issues with the array VOC now (520 volts) with my grid tied inverter and I don't expect any during the winter (560 volts), but I could have an issue with the smaller off grid inverter if I use it as a backup. I'm wondering if I can just wait till ambient temperatures increase and the sun comes up more before starting the backup inverter in the winter to avoid a problem with the array VOC exceeding the inverter capability (500 volts). I can reduce the number of panels operating from 14 to 10, but am interested to see if most think that would be the best option. I have a backup generator that I can use, so the timing of starting up the inverter is not critical.
