Enphase M-series Now Storage Compatible?

Looks like enphase made the M-series compatible with their storage systems

Enphase Solar systems with M215 and M250 microinverters are now fully compatible with Enphase Storage through a quick upgrade process.

But does anyone know if this new firmware will work with other inverters either now or in the future or if it's going to be locked down to only their system? If the new firmware allows the micros to frequency shift than I assume other inverters can work with it too but if it's the envoy communicating to the micros using the PLC over ac line then that might be a different story. I'd rather build my own system than pay for theirs. Thanks on advance for any info
