On the growatt 12000 (SPF 12000 t dvm-mpv)what is the maximum allowable solar string current, it says in the manual that the total PV input is 120 amps, there are two string inputs available, does that mean 60 amps is allowable per string? It seems like a lot

Maximum PV charge current is 120a for the 12000. Doesn't specify a per mppt limit.
It may seem like a lot, but GW decided to have fewer MPPT, with more power per MPPT. With a 240 Voc limit, you need a lot of amps to get to 7000W limit of the solar charger. If you put 2 panels in series for 80 watts, you need almost 90 amps to max out the charger.

First yes, to the question about the two strings, as for 60amps.. ttl input to Growatt via each string, which means you would need a good size cable to carry that kind of Amperage ttl per string.. You may consider Series-Parallel for each string, to keep your voltage down and yet get the amps you need or want.. etc..
