how to sync charging with grid-tied inverter?

I have a question regarding a grid tied inverter conneced with energy storage via AC coupling.
I'd to understand a way how the system shall work in a real time conditons, where we would like to max out self consumption and reduce energy draw from the grid.
During a day sun is not giving a constant output as this depends on factors like angle, time and weather. How then one can charge energy storage when the sun production drops?
In many cases I did not found a clear scenario where a charger was able to receive data about home consumption, PV production to set proper charging power to the energy storage charger.
At the moment my understanding is when the PV power goes down the charger will pull from the grid, so it will use an expensive electricity.
Is there a setup that can manage this?
Do you have any experience with a similar setup and requirments?

Thanks in advance for all input.

Grid-tied hybrid or AC coupled ESS handle this by measuring grid import/export using a CT clamp, creating a feedback loop to adjust their output to minimise grid usage.
