Hey Folks:

I've been running my hydro/solar system for 17 years or so. When I look at the schematics of other systems I always see a shunt at the negative bus bar. I've never had one on my system. What is its purpose? Is it only there so that you can add an Amp meter to monitor the amps being produced?

A shunt measures incoming and outgoing current so you can measure state of charge accurately. Voltage isn't a good indicator with LiFePO4, so you need to actually measure the energy going in and out to know. You don't need it (I don't use one).
