Daly smart bms turns itself off

Hi everyone

I have a Daly smart bms (250amp model). Unit runs great, however, since installing (5weeks) it’s turned itself off randomly about 7 times. There seems to be no rhyme or reason.
There doesn’t appear to be a log file so can’t see a reason it’s happening.

I just turn it back on and all is fine again.

has anyone had The same issue? Tips, advice welcome.

Is it a smart BMS? It could be going into sleep mode. However I assume it should wake up if any current is pulled or pushed into the batteries.

Def not going to sleep. It’s used every minute of every day.

Is it a smart model? What does "goes to sleep" mean exactly? Does it refuse to charge, refuse to discharge, or just not show up in the Bluetooth app? People ask relevant questions, but you still give vague answers. If it is a "smart" model and the bluetooth connection is dropping, there is a setting to prevent that.

My apologies if I have come across as vague. I have tried to answer quickly.

the unit no longer turns off, what it does when in discharge, and when it’s hot (but only 31c hot) is that it is getting faulty readings on 2 cells (combines them - see video) and then the unit goes into error and shuts off the discharge mos. now clearly my cells are not dropping to 2v and near 5v and then after a reset going back to normal. So I am assuming it’s faulty.

I do though, have an interesting video showing this.

it is the 250a smart BMS model.
I’ll attach the video

I’d love to hear people’s faults before I contact daly.

thanks

Make sure connections are tight, but acting like that, it is likely a bad BMS.
I have not seen this behavior on my 250A Daly Smart BMS.

Connections are all right and double checked.

this only happens at the end of a hot day, not I. The morning too. Seems to be heat related.

What is your MOS protect temperature set at? Mine came set at 47 degrees Celsius, I haven't changed it, but that is simply because it is winter here. That would not be an unusual high temperature here in Phoenix during the summer, so I wonder about the default.

It is the default temp settings.
That said, I’m not getting an over temp error so I don’t think think this is what is causing the discharge mos to fault. It appears to be cell voltage reading errors

Hi Ryang, i have the same problem with the voltage spikes (randomly wrong Cell Volt reading). I have Daly Smart BMS 16S 250 Amps HD-Version DL-BMS-R32-01E . The problem was a firmware bug. I reported that to DALY and i get a newer Firmware (Version 20210112-1. 01T). This fixes the problem and i have nerver seen again wrong Cell or pack Voltage. As I can see in the video, your firmware on the Daly is very old and I think it is an early, buggy version. Try to get the latest version from Daly support.

Hi Ryang. Attached are two pictures documenting the error. I read the BMS values from the RS485 interface and store the data in a Microsoft SQL database for analysis, dashboard, etc.

thanks for essage

they have also said to update the bms firmware.

however, i cant seem to get the lptop to see the bms.

I have plugged in the usb direct to laptop, but it says unrecognised device.

the daly documentation seems to reference installing th CAN box software driver
and the RS485 to USB driver

did you have to do this? Where did you find them?

Thanks

Ahh nice. Can you do a software upgrade from it? Or is it just useful for the CAN driver?

From what I can tell:
The BMS has a serial interface, they convert it to USB (not particularly difficult since the S in USB stands for serial), then the driver converts it back to represent itself as a serial port to your computer running the software. Yes it is a kludge, but most modern computers don't come with serial ports anymore. Canbus is a totally different protocol. The PC software will work with either, but you need to purchase the Canbus interface if you want it.

You were looking for the driver to let your computer see the USB device in order to upgrade your firmware, or did I misunderstand?

your spot on. i just need the driver and software (which i think i has) to make it all work.

I am trying it all again now :)

thanks again. ill let everyone know how it goes.

I think i may be mis understanding.

the bms comes with a UART to Bluetooth cable which is a microUSB . is this the one you update off?

I am trying to use the USB (traditional USB) that plugs into a power meter port i believe. Perhaps the wrong cable?

When you said you were bluetoothing at the same time as wired connection i just assumed this cable setup? What did you use to connect to the PC?

Thanks in advance

Which cable did you connect to to do the firmware update? Was the the microUSB cable the bluetooth runs off?

I don't need a firmware update, but your USB cable should be plugged into the port labeled monitor on the BMS. Mine is a regular USB cable.

Thanks for confirming. Daly are saying it’s the uart cable.

and the driver works fine with it?

I haven't tried it for the BMS, it is however a "standard" driver that works for my power supply and programmable electronic loads. Lots of equipment uses the same driver for the same reason.

Ahh okay thanks.

If your ever bored and want to try it out I’d be very grateful :)

It will take a couple of days, right now the BMS isn't hooked up and I don't have a PC in the garage. I will hook it up and use a laptop.
