Leaking Electrolyte from Bigbattery Powerblock

More than likely, it is coming from the over pressure relief valve.

The evidence we currently have is that Big battery themselves found 11 leaky cells in their inventory, I had a leaky cell, and Seth possibly had a leaky cell. That is 13 cells in a single batch, and all were lishen cells.

I think it might be the supplier at this point. Bigbattery has a lot of people working their quality control, and they use good equipment. So I am starting to think it was the cell supplier.

Because bigbattery also has their own issue of leaking cells, I am guessing that we cannot blame their shipping company. These cells are leaking before they leave bigbattery.

At this point, I am thinking the problem is Lishen cells. What do you guys think?
It seems to be going that way .... but that other thread hasn't really posted much evidence of wide spread Lishen leaking cells as their intro seemed to indicate.

My biggest concern whether we can trust what Big Battery has to say.

Bad cells and poor Qc on the part of both lishen and BB. I mean seriously...how do leaky cells get passed both? perhaps I know how they got out of China.....they’ll sell anything. I would expect BB should recognize this, too.

Solar newbie here. Wow I just ordered a Hawk from BB which is supposed to be delivered this Saturday. I will definitely take pictures as I unbox it. Looking forward to this forum and building my Solar system. I appreciate everyone’s feedback on this site! Thanks again!

If the leaking is coming from the over pressure relief valve, the simple solution would be to have the relief valve on top of the battery so the fluid does not leak out of the relief valve. I have read that the batteries can be oriented on their sides, ( most of us build out batteries with the relief valve on top) if the relief valve is on the top then only gases would vent out not liquid. Simple Solution ???
 
Whatever happened to Seth's unit, it was more that just a leaky cell. I will be laying my units with the relief valve on top just to be safe.
What other companies use Lishen? How long have they been around?
 
Do you think the thousands of cells shipped are kept in an upright position?
No, I am sure they are not. But to me, the pressure relief valve should be on the top. I decided before anyone complained about leaking cells that I would keep mine upright. Likely that the electrolyte coverage is also better in that position.
 
Sure and they use cylindrical cells. Either way, these cells should not be leaking. I am looking forward to an update in the other thread regarding this.
I have heard people say that their 272AH cells have corrosion on the vent covers lately. I just dismissed it as a smudge or something, perhaps I misjudged.

I have wondered about that too. Maybe being stored in a high humidity environment caused the corrosion. It wasn't bad. But I don't know or can't recall anyone with EVE cells reporting corrosion in that area. I don't know what material is used in any of the vent covers. Probably aluminum?

If it's caused by a gassy vent due to a faulty vent that would not be good. And I think the corrosion would be much worse. But we don't know of any Lishen 272ah cells that have leaked. So far it's only been the Lishen 170ah cells leaking.

I am looking forward to Alkaline updating his thread. It will be interesting to know the specifics of the Lishen cells in question. I would not be surprised if they are also 170ah.

While I agree that the problem is likely either QA failure (at BB and/or in China) or design defect in the Lishen cells, I'm wondering how it is that the "cells are leaking before they leave bigbattery"?

I mean the boxes aren't water tight and the case isn't. Given how these things aren't stored / delivered on their backs (with the vents up), if they were leaking wouldn't someone along the way notice? I mean I would surely have noticed any fluids coming out of the unit when it was vertical for the photos. I assume that in this orientation and moving it around, the cells would leak out into the case and then out of the case.

Are you thinking that they are leaking inside (or slowly leaking) and just not enough to be noticed in transit or by the end consumer?

Certainly is a mystery. If a Lishen defect, then its possible (this is pure speculation) that the defect isn’t making itself noticeable until a certain event, for instance a few charge cycles or until perhaps the terminals or terminal areas are stressed enough or in just the right way.
 
YES, EXACTLY @solarbot!! BB has made it blatantly clear that I am not as important as Will. Therefore, I did not dare take it apart to investigate.
I asked BB for permission to break seal & inspect. They said yes, open and look, no disassembly allowed. I didn't see any value to do so at the time because wills was the only one. I am rethinking that now I have read this thread. "Note" I have been using mine on its back with cells vertical since reading about wills issue.

Please reply back and let me know if you have issues. I will be sure do to the same. Spent too much money on these things not to monitor them.

I installed the 3 HAWKs last night and they are on their backs. Since my install is fixed (vs. say an RV or something mobile), I'm hoping that the lack of movement and being on their backs means I get a long safe service life.

So far everything is going well. I really have to say that I wasn't a fan of the Anderson connectors at first but man they are really easy vs the individual cables in my old DIY gel bank. I think they will make it super easy to add in new units going forward.

One thing though, I'm not a fan of the smaller cables that BB sales with their units. I ended up getting a thicker cable from Amazon as I have 3 units in parallel and they are like 6-8ft away from the inverter. Maybe if you are in an RV, only have 1 unit, or are super close they would be fine but not for me. Yes, I know they are high temp blah blah but that isn't how I roll.

Also, I noticed that whenever I power up 1 of the 3 units (wired in parallel) the other 2 units' volt meters light up even though they are switched off. So you still have to go push the power button on the other two to 'connect' them to the power source, at least that is what I'm assuming.

Agreed about volt meter. mine do the same. I believe the meter is wired on the wrong side of switch. And yes button in= power on, button out= power off, independent of each outer

I suspect they are rather heavy, and rough handling during shipping must break a seal that should obviously be a bit stronger. I doubt that BB is knowingly installing and shipping leaking cells, and are pretty unhappy about it.

It's a shame, I was going to purchase some myself, but of course now I will wait until they have resolved the problem. They really are a big market if not leaking, and I love how they did the battery connection via PCB. Unfortunately it looks like Lishen needs to fix their cells, and BB should slightly redesign to hold the cells upright, and keep them upright during shipping.
 
So I've had the 3 units hooked in and running for a bit. I know someone will say don't use gel duh! but coming from the 7.2kW nominal (3.6kW usable) gel (@12v) battery bank to the ~13kW (@24v) has been a major upgrade! Both in useable battery / runtime and the ability to charge. Call me a fool but I ordered a 4th one over the weekend. I installed them on their backs so I'm hopeful that the biggest risk for me was during shipping.

Edit: to be clear the 4th hasn't shipped yet so I guess there is still some risk.
 
Well .... if we haven't gotten any feedback from Mr Green about what they found with Seth's unit by now .... we probably won't.

I can somewhat understand not wanting to get back into a hostile thread, but if he wasn't going to provide feedback on the units shipped back he shouldn't have made the commitment.

Yes, unfortunately any comment he makes opens him up to legal liability problems for something that *I think* is not really his fault, and couldn't really be foreseen. Certainly I wouldn't expect the cells to leak, the manufacturer of the cells says the orientation is perfectly acceptable, etc.

I seriously doubt that Big Battery would knowingly ship problem batteries, they put a lot of time and effort into that design, and it really checks a lot of boxes. Lishen is the company sending them defective cells, good luck holding a Chinese company responsible for defective quality.

BB is in a "damned if I do, damned if I don't" situation here. Any lawyer worth his pay would tell them to shut up.

Just my opinion (and worth what you paid for it, nothing), if they aren't leaking, and you have them where the cells are upright, they will likely last as long as you expect without problems. If they get over charged and bloated, then of course you'll have a problem (just like any battery). I think something in the cell production process is just not getting as strong a seal as they expect, and rough handling during shipping and the orientation springs a leak. I would think the majority of the cells don't leak, or Lishen would have identified the problem and fixed their process already.

I agree @Bob B, Today marks 3 full weeks that they have had it in hand. ANOTHER blatant lie from @MrGreen stating that he would post the results after receiving my unit.
 
I'm a little hyper sensitive about customer service and business honesty. The older I get, the less willing I am to accept poor service or being lied to.
I was always honest with my customers no matter what ... and even my own management often couldn't understand why the customers liked my work so much ... and do everything possible to get things right the first time. If you do it right ... people will come back for more.
Too many places still trying to sell people crap they don't need and doing a poor job of it.

I will drive 3 times as far and pay a premium to support that business that is doing their best to providing great customer service ... and I have a pretty long list of places I will never frequent again.
I believe if everyone did this we would get be treated better by business in general. I treat the good ones like gold to try to help keep them successful.

I'm just not willing to "settle" for poor customer service or being lied to.
 
Oh .... and it also turns out that doing it right the first time is more efficient and cost effective. It took me a while to "train" a new project manager to put a few more hours in the initial job and have less hours in the end ... once their spreadsheets proved this worked, they would be totally on board.
I was the only one in our branch who ever did a major job and had no punch list .... most would have pages and pages of items that were a LOT harder to fix after the fact than to do it right the first time.

At the end of our jobs, most of them would have an independent quality control group come in and go thru everything with a fine toothed comb ... make you demonstrate things worked per spec .... oh .... don't get me started on spec's LOL. Most people hated these people .... I liked them .... I wasn't trying to sneak by with half a&&ed work.

By doing this, I slowly changed the culture of our branch .... hope they haven't forgotten now that I retired.

Sorry for tooting my own horn a little, but sure wish the world would wake up to this way of doing things.

Hmm, I would not call the thread hostile. Justifiably skeptical perhaps. There is the matter of living down the white grease claim. I can understand some discomfort there. As things stand I will forevermore associate Big Battery with "white grease eats your battery".

Then there is the claim that Big Battery discovered 11 leaking cells at the factory by inspection. Please excuse me, but given the circumstances I can't help thinking that when they say they found 11 then the real truth must be "way more" and "it happened to customers".
