I know the instructions say to mount the EG4 6500 EX 48 vertical but is there any reason why it can't be mounted horizontal? I have a compartment that everything would fit into nicely if only I can mount the 2 inverters horizontally?

The active fan cooling on those units should be okay but I would keep a very close eye on it. I think the software has access to some of its internal temperatures.

Not sure what you mean by "compartment". If its a closed space or even an open front book shelf kind of situation perhaps you could add additional air flow with some quiet computer fans to induce horizontal air flow through the inverters. I'm using a super quiet 6" x 6" fan at the top of our router/IT closet in the office to keep it cool in the summer.

If you do this you will need to add significant airflow to the locker in order to avoid overheating. And be sure you do not block the ability to remove and clean the intake air filters routinely.

I haven't tried cleaning mine yet....do the covers just pop off with a screwdriver? Foam filters?

Yes, there is a small Phillips screw at the bottom. The grill is metal, slide it down after removing screw and it will come off. Little compressed air and good to go.

Agree, seems like some definite airflow considerations would be needed - ran across this person's setup on Youtube and was surprised it wasn't causing some kind of overheat alarm - I assume the 6500 should power down before it got to the point of fire danger?

We have a smaller trailer but a need for the larger wattage of a unit like the 6500, so I'm considering building an aluminum framed fireproofed "locker" with multiple compartments that would mount externally on the rear 2" hitch of the camper, using a good balance of my tongue weight for durocking/fireproofing between battery and inverter compartments, and the camper itself. I'll need to contend waterproofing with airflow, but it does let me mount vertically and get closer to the approved clearances, which makes me feel more comfortable. Anyone heard of any similar attempts?

There was someone here on the forum who had them in a shed and they would overheat and shutdown safely. The issue was he was not cleaning the intake filters regularly.
