Not familiar with victron, do I need this cable to connect the smart hunt to the Solar Assistant PI ?

Yes. With the official VE.Direct to USB cable you just have to plug it into your Solar Assistant Pi. You might have to select Victron from the dropdown or reboot, I don't recall, but that is the cable and it's a very seamless process.

I check this product pretty regularly on Amazon, and it's been consistently at $130, so while it's 19% off the price they list, it's about $13 below the price it's been for quite some time.

Yes. The shunt sits between the battery negative and the rest of the system. You can also monitor the midpoint battery voltage to get a better idea of how the SoC is across all your batteries.

So between the negative buss and the 4/0 cable to the system, correct?
To monitor the mdpoint, suppose it needs to be mounted mid point on the buss, or no?

Victron has the SmartShunt manual on their site with diagrams that demonstrate proper wiring configurations for the midpoint monitoring. It uses a separate probe with a ring terminal for midpoint monitoring.
And yes, you are correct, if on the negative side, you had a busbar for the batteries and a busbar for the rest of the system, the SmartShunt would sit in-between them. If you didn't have a dedicated battery busbar, it would sit between the battery negative and the system busbar.

£98 , around $124 US. Note we have to pay a sales tax, VAT, of 20%, so before tax £ 82 or $105.5 US
My guess is that these Victron price reductions are to compete with the aggressive advertising and low pricing of Renogy products.

I think it may actually be the LiTime/Redodo/powerqueen line of products causing pricing/demand pressure. Because now they have an entire line of products including mppts, circuit breakers, ANL fuse holders etc. So if someone buys one of those batteries, they may well go for matching accessories from the same brand.
