Yeah, annoys me also.

I've been hacked!!! no, You were to stupid to use difficult passwords and used the same easy password on all websites...

Did they gain access to your computer using an exploit, and recovered they your stored passwords? Yes, you're hacked.
If not, you were just dumb, they might have hacked a source and recovered your password, but it's your fault that credentials actually worked elsewhere as well.

Not hacked, just a persistent spammer signing up multiple accounts. I don’t know who they think is going to buy fake diplomas from them (which is what google translate says they’re selling).

The solution is forum moderators being online at this time of day, as exactly the same thing happened same time yesterday.
DIPLOMAS? damn, someone posted cheap ED tablets. Have to break the bad news to the wife. 😓

Does the forum software have a setting to limit number of new topics / posts for newly created accounts? Like say one new topic per day and maybe x number of posts in threads that aren't theirs until x amount of account age? Spam is some serious bullcrap. I hate having to program systems to automate defense against it. People just love ruining things for the rest of us.
Xenforo has all kinds of addom spam filters. I can't find the link for it right now, but there's one that you can try out, it's just slider bars that increase or decrease the sensitivity to inappropriate content/spam based on keywords. The one I'm thinking of is specifically called "showcase filter".

WAIT WAIT! I NEED a diploma.

Maybe if enough people hit "report" within a certain fairly short time interval, a poster can be automatically blocked and flagged ?
There are enough of us out here to hit the button pretty smartly.
A moderator can then investigate and take appropriate action.

Reports get dealt with quite fast, especially when it's spam. Yes, it happens that accounts get through all the filters and due diligence we've put in place, but they will be gone pretty quickly after being reported.

It's just one of those things with a nearly 100k user forum.

Also, please note that the last post in this thread was March 12th and was asleep until @bds70 woke it up :) There have been a lot less issues with spam since last year I think.

I host a TON of forums and from tons of experience I have had and have witnessed the site owners try thru the years the method on this site is the best way to go.

Automated methods ALWAYS filter good users. Its commons sense if you think about it since someone will end up trying to do what the site will think a spammer would do just using the site normally at some point.

Since this site has very dedicated moderators that handle spam 100% each day its the way to go. Most sites don't have moderators that are willing to address spam like this site does.

As the old saying goes if its not broke don't fix it. Because you can break anything if you fix it enough :)
