Caution Before Purchasing Victron from XYZ Distributor!

Victron is big in South Africa. They have regular training tours through the country and they get their official distributors to host the training sessions ( mostly for free ) which can be up to a week in duration. At times Victron would arrange seminars / new product launches / training...

Wire ripped out of panel junction box

OP - maybe you can flatten the crimp portion , drill and fit a screw and nut and with a ring lug on the cable end , if space allows.

I just direct shorted my brand new 135amp LiFePO4 battery - is it toast?

If you cannot wake the bms up , cut the casing open with an oscillating saw and I would replace the bms with an external one. JBD will work great and you will have access to it in future via BT / RS232 / CanBus etc. a Lot of these sealed batteries contain very crappy and under rated bms’s. I...

Go Victron - you will thank me later.

    Overkill bms useless

i had to do that on the first JBD’s I bought about 4 years ago. The later ones circa 2023 are much more accurate without recalibration.

    Lug holes too big

Better to source lugs with smaller size holes.

Does JBD bms have auto recovery after LVC?

You are quoting extremes here. I will not respond further.

Does JBD bms have auto recovery after LVC?

The scenario is as follows : Normally battery terminal voltage will be around ( 4 x 3,35 ) 13,4v. Should one cell trigger a LVD at 2,8v , the pack voltage is still at 12,85v. Whatever charger you have will respond to this and start charging the pack. Say the LVD reset point is set at 2,9v , the...

Does JBD bms have auto recovery after LVC?

On the JBD it will only disconnect the load side but will still allow charging. Once the LVD recovery setpoint is reached , the load side will be turned on again.

    JBD 4S 200A BMS - heater function?

I think the contact is automatically turned on when one or more of the temp sensors detect a low temp. Maybe around 0 deg C. I suggest that you put a meter across the terminals ( DC voltage range ) and cool one of the temp sensors down. If no voltage present then switch to resistance measurement...

DON'T Install DC Isolators on Solar

On a slightly different note : How many of you installed a proper fire extinguisher , rated for Li fires , near your batteries as well as a smoke detector ?

DON'T Install DC Isolators on Solar

I agree. DC isolator with overload protection. Avoid the unknown brands at all cost. I normally go for Noark , Chint , Hager , Gewiss , Schneider amongst a few other reputable brands.

DON'T Install DC Isolators on Solar

I have these all over my installation i.e. solar pv feed in , battery feeds to inverters etc. To qualify ‘ unless in a case of emergency ‘ , that is.

Looks like JK BMS are in Hot Water

    The model number is : JBD-AP21S001-L21S-150A-B .

Looks like JK BMS are in Hot Water

Fully agree. It appears if JBD is not making the 16s contactor based one any longer. I am running one of their latest 150A 16s units with both UART and RS485 sockets ( heating pad output on request ) . Love it !! We are just a small part of their market - you will find JBD in lots of medical...

Bought a van! Now what? 12 or 48 volt?

Lots of rv builds on the internet using this idea. She has to have a frame made to accommodate the panels so why not just add a slide-out panel at the bottom.

Bought a van! Now what? 12 or 48 volt?

Lots of good advice on this post. I would suggest starting with as much solar pv as possible. Ever considered a double stack pv array where the bottom section slides out when stationery ? You can use rigid panels for the top tier and flexo panels for the bottom tier. This will make the slide...

    Overkill bms useless

I am very satisfied with my 16s JBD managed battery. Added a Victron Smart Shunt and on both units the current , voltage and power measurements are within 1% of each other.

    Overkill bms useless

Not the case. I sell 3 other brands as well. Just stating facts. Use them for a couple of months first and then post constructive criticism.

    Overkill bms useless

Your statement is very harsh. I have x6 JBD’s in service at home and have sold about x20 of them. I have not been able to kill one of them yet. As to the inaccuracy in ampere readings, have you calibrated both the Victron shunt and confirmed the JBD internal shunt calibration? After that confirm...

    Overkill bms useless

I agree that the JBD BMS‘s do not report well under 1 - 2amps. Overall 2% accuracy , who cares.

P- And B- Cables on BMS is too short! How to extend it?

Agree with the ‘bolt together‘ idea. I have used this method quite a few times as the Daly cables are generally very short. By heat shrinking the connection it will both provide insulation and improve stability. Also , you can then ‘bend’ the cable at the joint to suit your application.

Buy a cheap Pi Zero W and run program on there.

    Water heating through SCC

I do agree that it is not optimal without an mppt but it works and the energy is free!

Care to share the circuit diagram please.
  28. Pierre

    Water heating through SCC

You make a good point if you have the real estate to house these panels. Also they are single purpose i.e. only good for heating water. At least with solar pv you can use the power elsewhere when the water heater is on temp.
