Lightning Grounding

At some convenient point you should have one ground rod. Connect all to this one rod to be as safe as possible.

Nothing is going to make you and your equipment impervious to a direct lightning strike. Ground it and move on.
Since I posted my last response, I did a little more research, and what you've just said is the tentative conclusion I came to as well.

There are also some lightning protection systems that one can install around whatever you're trying to protect from direct lightning strikes. However, as far as I understand, the ground rod is not installed for the purpose of protecting from lightning.
