Yeah, I would certainly recommend paralleling one of each type cell for each position. So each cell group is then one wide post and one narrow post cell.

I hate the original configuration less, and I retract my throat punch recommendation. Somebody made the best of what they had in a creative way.

I liked the original as the cables were more straight with possibly less stress on the terminals compared to the 90 and 180 degree bends on the revised layout. And the bus bars are no help if there is expansion.
