I'm curious about this as well. I just had a 15k installed and they said the CT wasn't necessary since I'm backing up my whole panel. The installer said they are only needed when you have a critical loads panel and the inverter is on a breaker in the main panel. When it is doing everything it can look at the grid connection it has and know what/if it is back feeding. In the sub panel case, it needs the CT as its only way to see what is truly going to/from the grid.
