I’m a novice at electrical wiring. Would someone explain how a surge protection device protects against voltage or current surges?

This diagram doesn’t make sense to me. It seems there is a clear path along the positive conductor, through the circuit breaker, to the DC output.

How does the shared path to ground through the surge protection device protect the equipment connected to the positive conductor?

Thanks

The surge protector tries to limit voltage spikes, it does that in this case by employing a shunt to ground that is triggered by over-voltage. This type of device does not directly sense or limit current surges, that is left to the circuit breaker in this example.
