Tried Venus v2.90 to v3.21 on Raspberry Pi 4B - Appears to have failed

Of course. Each device must be connected to the GX device via a compatible method.

Why would you plug a VE.CAN controller into a VE.Bus port? Why not just plug everything into the RPi ethernet port then, right? That uses RJ45 connectors, so it must work.

VE.Bus is for VE.Bus inverters only - reserved exclusively for paralleling inverters and programming via MK3-USB adapter. The only thing you can plug your inverter's other VE.Bus port to is an identical model inverter.
VE.CAN is for VE.CAN or compatible devices. Off the top of my head - the high end MPPT and the Lynx Shunt.
VE.Direct is for VE.Direct devices, typically MPPT and Shunts.

You can daisy chain all VE.CAN and VE.CAN compatible devices.

You can daisy chain up to 25 VE.CAN MPPT to a Lynx Shunt to the GX device.

Thank you for the information.
