Has anyone else realized how far we are away from running civilization fully on wind and solar?

Do a search for "strategic reliability reserve", it's operating right now, and will soon will be expanded. Natural gas and diesel fired powered generators on standby.
Yep I take anything that a politician says with a shovel full of salt no matter what color they are. It looks like the ratepayers in CA are paying power plants 8 billion dollars for the power plants to do nothing but keep warm.LOL

We didn't have anything to do with it, then. And we don't have anything to do with it, now.
Oh my...

Although I am pretty sure once you have an opinion, reading articles that don't feel right are not going to change you.
But who knows....

Yup, that is one of the reasons my goal is to use solar and batteries to reduce my bill as low as possible. Something is wrong with the way these monopolies are regulated. I still think batteries are part of the solution. Even to get paid for standby would not other me because it is less polluting than keeping all those boilers warm.
From what I understand from another forum, Some Tesla Powerwall users are being paid for participating in a Virtual Power Plant scheme where that aggregate capacity can help reduce the demand during the neck of the duck curve. Since that aggregate generating capacity is distributed it appears as reduced demand because the power most likely serves loads on the way to a substation so very little of it even gets to a substation. The best I can do is not use the grid during that time.

Yep I am with you paying powerplants to do nothing but keep warm is not the way to go I think upgrading the grid is a better way to spend the money and you get something to see not hot air.

A major reason I don't believe this global warming the sky is falling nonsense is because I can't help but notice the ones who are screaming it are also the ones who have big mansions, giant yachts, and private jets they shoot around in all the time to lecture the world about how the end is nigh if they don't stop fertilizing their fields and don't stop driving their cars. Oh, and somehow magically paying all these extra taxes will help "fix" it. Yeah, those millionaires telling us to pay more enviro-taxes (which then interestingly comes back to line their pockets...).

That, and nothing they've screamed about has come true. By now we were supposed to have lost part of the coastal towns to the ocean but interestingly enough looking at a photo of the Statue of Liberty from 100 years ago vs now the waterline hasn't changed. Bah....

Oh, another sign it is a farce - good science debates a theory from all directions, and doesn't try to prove or disprove a particular position, just tries to prove the correct position, whatever it is. This whole global warming is kinda like the plandemic narrative, if you stray too much from the official narrative you're labeled all kinds of nasty things, can't get grants to test your theories as easily, kinda treated as an outcast... Hmm, not suspicious at all.!
I believe in global warming and cooling. Been going on for millions of years. Not a new phenomena in the big picture of the earths history. Wait a few centuries and it will be cooling off again with a new ice age. Eventually the sun will die out in a few billion years, start to swell and scorch all life on earth. Gotta wonder if humankind (pc) is still around then if we caused that?

When something happened, doesn't prove how it happened. Findings can be bent to benefit any side.

So the only reason you are a solar enthusiast is because of your reduced monthly electric bill ?

I am with you yes there is global warming and has been happening for eons think about where does all the carbon that we are burning come from in the first place it just has been stored by plants and animals and we are just releasing it again to continue the cycle of life.

I know the question was not directed at me but it applies to some extent. Yes, the economics are a main driver for me, but not the only reason. However if there is a benefit to the environment because of my actions then my grandchildren will benefit. I also drive two EVs and have converted my natural gas FAU to a minisplit and my next project is to replace the gas water heater with a heat pump water heater. Neighbors, family and some friends have been influenced by those examples without me having to proselytize.

Cool thing about solar power for home use is that both climate change (man made or naturally occurring) deniers and believers can use / like them for the same or different reasons.

They can stick it to the man when it comes to government regulated power monopolies, they can save you money long term, they can be seen as possibly helping the environment, they can assist with general power outages/unreliability, etc..

What can't they do, what's not to love!?

Not the only reason but a good one. Just trying to keep it real. I am more concerned at the moment about humankind being destroyed by a nuclear engagement started by that madman psychopath dictator of Russia than I am global warming and you should be also.

Though I am not who you directed this at I just have to wonder what is wrong with that reason?

My interest in solar power is neither global warming, or to reduce my power costs (since my average electrical bill is around $50/mo there is not much to reduce). Backup power in emergency and simply the technology of it all is interesting enough to spend my time and money on it.

Alternative energy is fascinating enough with needing a religious conviction to indulge in it.
