This is totally a solar/ alternative energy topic, NOT a political one…..
Everyone with the roll of being the family provider,( whatever that means anymore) should watch Tucker Carlson tonite..8 29 22.( 16 min energy segment) utube, tv, whatever….. this is happening all over the world and much of America is focused on who won a Hollywood actor award…or who is dating who………..
Whats happening with energy and cost and supply in Europe is mind boggling… and as always is a snapshot of what coming here……..It always has…always does….
If that’s not enough to make a person consider what to do ,then nothing will….

Build your system …
Build a system ….
Build some kind of system…
Just build somthing…..

Yep it's coming for most of the Globe unless you live in one of the oil producing Arab countries or Russia.

I would say don't just build a system, you need to build a system with at least enough PV and a big enough Inverter that can take you off the Grid. Batteries can be bought in incremental stages if you cannot afford everything at once.
If you can power your house throughout the day and have enough power for lights and a fridge at night your going to be in a lot better position for the coming problems.

I agree totally … your correct…but you are thinking like an aware person, your not the “average bear “ most aren’t aware that a real problem exists that have attainable real world answers…almost anyone can do this if they plan ahead..
when the American average new car price is over 600 per month and used car over 400, and yet people espouse they canot afford a alternate energy source …..a parachute of sorts…….!!! Right… they don’t have a money problem ,they have a priority problem…

As a backup, I bought a wood pellet stove and enough pellets for at least three months when it gets really cold here (MN). We use a NG furnace. Solar just won’t be enough for heating.

Totally agree on that unless you have a very unusually system and situation.,.. most success is achieved by incremental advances . . Propane is a great back up , so are wood stoves . Pellet stoves … a whole pallet of charcole , a few hickory logs and a slow smoker . ya need electricity for some things ,sometimes …ya don’t need a ton… but some will help a lot…. it to have access to several fall backs energy sources of anything is ultimate.
baby steps are important for many goals, as when you look at the whole picture at once of what needs to be done ,it can appear overwhelming… many will just walk away …
ya gotta get a mule aimed in the right direction before you can start pullin on his rope…

My vacation/weekend house is on 3 acres of forested land that I'm slowly building up for my eventual retirement.....or emergency home if the SHTF.

I have a 10 kW central heater that's expensive to use, but available from grid power. The house also already had a kerosene-powered Monitor heater and a 200 gallon or so fuel tank. I have some of the supplies for making biodiesel to refill this tank, but haven't had the time to work on that hobby / project yet.

I'll probably eventually install a mini split heat pump (to replace inefficient 10 kW heater) that's more solar friendly. Despite being redundant with the heat pump and off-grid solar, I'll probably also install a wood stove because I have a nearly unlimited amount of wood.

Of course, I'm Gen X. I don't really expect anyone to take care of me, so I'm following the boy scout rule of always being prepared.

Edit: LOL, just saw the previous post. Yeah, I don't put any / much stock in what Tucker Carlson says. His job is literally to rile people up to increase/ maintain ad revenue....I just like being self-reliant and the world is in a very unstable place currently.

Now I need more ammo to guard the pellets and solar panels! :)

Weeellll, ya know…..they say……ummmm ,sometimes,…..it’s sorta like …uhhh…yaknow whatimsaying, like man ,does anybody really know what time it is.?
I hope you will fare well, Jerimiah Johnson…..

yes , you will…..

Haaa, well I’m sorta proud of ya… at least ya didn’t cuss, scream and threaten to hurt my dog…
thanks. J.
LOL.

It's pretty simple. Europe is having an energy crunch because the idiots in charge decided to hang the security of their country on Russian energy.

It didn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that Putin is nothing more than a mobster and would eventually bite them in the rear end.

International trade is the tool of peace and prosperity, but they should have balanced their imports in a way that wouldn't be so harmful if one of them suddenly went offline. They didn't do that, they got greedy.

But its not the end of the world or their economy anymore than it was the end for the USA during the 1970 oil crunch. Its a speed bump.. a hiccup, and it will resolve within a year or two and their economy will take a small hit for it. People will have to turn down their thermostats a few degrees and start budgeting their finances with more responsibility.

Tucker Carlson is in business to anger you, scare you, and push any other buttons he can for profit. That kind of information source will cause mental health issues because it's not real. That's not to say it's fake, its just over blown, over hyped, and exaggerated to no end.

That knucklehead is on TV to manipulate the opinions of the gullible.

My local utility still uses coal power from North Dakota. Less than $0.12/kWh and don't expect them to change that price anytime isoon.

Now now … I stated clearly I was not trying to say anything political and here ya go… can’t let it alone…
i refuse to debate politics, religion or the merits of any media sources as they all suck and no one ever wins …..and this is not the proper forum…but if you really believe we aren’t fixing to get hammered on energy prices , then we simply disagree.. ..
but I’m still proud of ya…
thank you sir…J.

Europe will get hammered, not so much for the USA. We produce our own natural gas. Sure, we will ship some to Europe and that WILL raise the price here slightly, but we won't be shipping very much of it because it has to be liquefied first, and that adds significant cost to shipping it. Couple this significant shipping cost with the fact that the vessels that carry liquefied fuels are few and far between, and they will all be very busy.. Kind of like having lots of product to sell, lots of demand for the product, but no way to economically get it to your customers.

The USA will be fine, Europe is going to take a hit.. but its not going to kill them.

I live in the rural Michigan countryside and I have natural gas in my home, but we don't use it except for maybe the kitchen stove. Our house runs on solar and we even heat with the extra solar energy in the winter. The only time I burn wood is during January, and not much wood at that.

Maybe Europe could cut the VAT on utilities.... Long since been expensive energy in Europe. Nothing that new.
Things like a large SUV, pickup truck etc are only for the very wealthy business owners.

Well, I'll agree with you that nearly all media sources are suspect. Just good cop / bad cop to keep us riled up at each other so we don't get pissed off at the fox in the henhouse (billionaires leaching off all of us)
